How much wine do you make? (2024)

I’ve been making 15 to 20 gallons of country wine a year. Last year I also got grapes from a friend. I’ll be increasing production when my 88 vines (and counting) start producing.

    Problems with vines.

All grapes require a lot of pruning… it can be shocking how much you need to remove when you first see it. If yours haven’t been maintained it may take some drastic pruning to put them on the right path. Try contacting your local university extension program to see if there are some programs...

We have had that fog every morning this week. None of my grapes have started varaison yet. I only have fruit on the Marquette and two Brianna

Do they let some ripen? I find if you let hot peppers get ripe the sweetness combines well with the heat.

    Attack of the thrips

How are the JB’s? I went from one on a Tuesday to a thousand or more on Saturday. I put out five traps and sprayed the Marquette and Petite Pearl. The rest of the vines are small enough to do manual control.

Can anyone tell me if this is a problem? Some of my Marquette grapes have these purple-ish spots on the berries, but not all of them. The leaves of the vines don’t show any signs of disease.

We had to put our old dog Buddy down a few months ago and our 1-yr old labradoodle was just too much for our remaining old girl. Last week we picked up this sweetie Meet Coco Puff (grandson named her). She is Coppers sister from this years litter. He’s a good big brother!

Time to find the wild elderberry

I’m just to busy this year but it’s on my radar for the future. I’ve never had elderflower wine but I read a lot of good things.

They are all own-rooted northern hybrids. I’m a novice at grape growing so I don’t know if rootstock affects taste.

They never are. I use a small woodworking type clamp on the cane.
