    Veraison has started

My Baco noir and tempranillos is have been coloring up nicely for 2 weeks now, malbecs and tannat are still solid green. The tannats are usually late but the malbecs and tempranillos are usually within days. Hmmm.

    Is this herbicide damage?

I get damage like that every year. Not sure where it comes from, my guess is weed and feed from the neighbors. This year it killed several of my tomato plants. They say the worst times for spray is windy or hot and calm The 2,4-D can volatize in the heat and slowly drift when it's calm. I...

    Whole cluster volume

When I pick grapes I fill up 7 gallon ferment buckets to about the 6 or so gallon mark. It's usually about 25 to 30 lbs which is a little more then your 4 lbs per gallon. 4 lbs per gallon seems like a safe or conservative estimate. With a little squishing 5lbs per gallon is probably easy to...

    The 2024 crop year

I'm always surprised at how well the grapes do at high temps, but there is a limit, sorry you found it. Hopefully they will suffer through it and come out the other side stronger. We had a few days over 105 about 3 years ago, it was the only time I thought my grapes stopped growing.

    Low PH

I'm pondering this years plan and was looking at oak options, found this statement: "Oak adds a subtle, (or not-so subtle!) underlying dimension to many wines. Not only is it an expected flavor in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and many other dry white and red wines, it also has an added...

    Low PH

I only had about 6 gallons. I did think that it was fine with food. It just wasn't one I'd open for people if they just wanted a glass of wine. I'm no supertaster, and my palate is untrained so YMMV.

    Low PH

I grow Malbec. In my climate/soil the ph is usually high. I picked some early a few years back to try to preserve the acid. I don't have my notebook with me but I think the PH was still 3.4 to 3.5 and brix was 22 to 23. Drank it this year, the color was light and the taste thin, drinkable...

    The 2024 crop year

How is your vineyard doing in the heat? I do think my vines continue to grow until it hits about 105 F or 45.5 C, probably because of the low humidity/cooling efficiency. Temp and humidity yesterday: Did sunburn a few though Didn't fully eradicate my powdery mildew problem this year...

How much sugar should I buy?

When I read the title the first thing I thought was "well that depends on how many bags of coffee I'm buying". You know you have a problem when you hide your sugar consumption from your loved ones and have secret stashes around the house. Do they have a 12 step program for us?

A big bottle of wine sat in his basement for decades. It could go for $80K.

Not sure why this thread popped up as similar to 45 million year old yeast... But it did, so I had to find out what it sold for. $106,250 Reminds me of some late night show where the host asked some rich guy what's it's like to be rich, and the rich guy said, it's like everything is free.

    High Ph after MLF

So far the class is disappointing but not so bad that I'm skipping classes. There is some useful info and just hearing some of his 30 years of experience is reassuring. I usually harvest 50 to 60 lbs at a time and ferment in 7 gallon buckets so I have lots of opportunities to play. I need to...

    High Ph after MLF

This summer I'm taking a continuing ed course in grape growing wine making. I told my wife most of the people in the course would be better off just following this forum. Case in point - the instructor went on a little rant about "flabby high ph wines" and defined high as over 3.6. Basically...

I'm right there with you (nearly 60), I've got the lingering misc things to complete from our addition. I can't believe how long it's taking. I don't know how I did so much at 30... My time to completion of projects seems to be expanding at an exponential rate ; ) I've got lots of "arbor"...

Marijuana surpasses alcohol in daily use for Americans, study finds

I'm surprised the number of daily drinkers is that low. I thought Wisconsin alone had 14 million daily drinkers ; )

    Shoot thinning by professionals

Yes 4' spacing. I went back and forth on 4, 6, or 8. Had I known how vigorous they would be I might have gone to 8'. To make it worse, most of the vines have multiple trunks. The initial logic was to have a lower and upper fruiting zone (cover the full 10'+ of wall and fence)...

    Good news for Anchor Brewing

Today I learned why they call it steam beer. Also found an interesting article on what led to their demise. The article basically said COVID, distribution, and mismanagement. COVID because a large percentage of their beer went to restaurants.

    That's what I did today.

Planning for small vineyard in southern Arizona

I don't think my first year planting had many clusters and none in the tube. Iirc I may have seen a few midsummer flowering. Year 2 had lots of clusters.

    Musings from an old codger...

He declined the offer, but I think it did at least trigger some retrospect and that I'm serious. He finally agreed to meet with me. We walked around the yard point out some of the main problems. His values are definitely different than mine and basically said the view isn't worth anything...
