    Is Riesling doable for me?

I have no opinion on whether you can grow Riesling. But I will say I really enjoy growing my own grapes, it is rewarding but can be frustrating (disease, weather, bugs...). I started smaller and am expanding. You do need free time if you plan on doing the work. I do think if I asked the forum...

I'm alive! Grape growing 2023 begins

Thanks, I thought there was a point when grapes were no longer infected but didn't know the criteria.

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

I'm slowly losing the powdery mildew battle. The spray seems to be working but my spray technique needs some work... I just use a hand pump with a 3 gallon tank. With the grapes being so tall I'm not getting good coverage on the top. The new infections are higher in the canopy and where you...

Offered a job as a winemaker, but at a price...

Good luck! About 12 years ago I went to work for myself. An opportunity just dropped in front of me and I knew I would always regret it if I didn't take it. For me worst case was a 30% pay cut, best case was over time I might be 10% ahead. After 10 years I closed down but am glad I took the...

Source for bottles and closure discussion

I'm pondering just bottling wine like beer, caps and all. Basically most of my wine is bulk aged for 6 to 12 months in 3 gallon carboys. I bottle 3 gallons, about 30 375 ml bottles, then drink it till it's gone, bottle another 3 gallons ... Since it will only be in the bottle for about 90...

I'm alive! Grape growing 2023 begins

Must just be the year for pm. As you likely know I feel your pain. It's to hot to spray sulfur here. I ordered a new gallon of "cease" for my pm mess. Should get here Saturday. I'll post if it seems to work...

    Training system for Seyval Blanc?

What did you decide? I'm not well versed in pruning or training systems so I don't have much to offer. It's interesting how far the weaker spurs are behind the stronger ones. I have some really big vines with 15 to 20 ft cordons and they do vary in how they develop but usually not as much...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

The herbicide damage was more extensive this year than past years and I'm at stalemate in my powdery mildew battle. I did lose some grape bunches to powdery mildew. This one was one of the worst I found. The powdery mildew is almost imperceptible on the leaves but is obvious on the grapes...

Question: 4 vines on a small trellis

This year I added the wire to the gutter although I agree with Snafflebit and don't consider it a permanent solution. I've got a metal roof and get roof avalanches on the driveway in winter so this fall I'm going to upgrade my roof avalanche suppression system and move the wires to avalanche...

    Starting a new vineyard

Thanks for the update. Looks great. I left some fruit on my year 2 vines. The vines seemed really healthy so I didn't think it would have much negative effect. Year 3 went great so I don't think having fruit in year 2 hurt much.

Some vines dead on top half

My wet vine event was several years ago. More of the vine came back than I expected. When I went to trim the "dead" pieces off I noticed some were still green on the inside. Some of the ones that were still green did come back. It just took a while. As for vine structure, do your thing. If...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

Had my computer glasses on today when I did my daily inspection and noticed some powdery mildew and herbicide damage. Normally I don't wear my glasses in the garden, but maybe I should since I didn't see the powdery mildew or herbicide damage yesterday. When I first started growing grapes I...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

There is no method only madness ; ) Basically it's a I want this vine to go "there" pruning, more like training vines for a pergola. "There" is over the garage door or over the driveway or to the top of the fence or.... Once I get the vines where I want it is more like spur pruning. The...

    Post your labels here

If we can solve our hwy 210 problem life would be grand... I've been growing grapes (Malbec, Tannat, Tempranillo and Baco Noir) probably not to far from you since about 2016. They are doing shockingly well. The Malbecs and Tannats are especially healthy. Try it! Then you can add "estate...

Hello from Salt Lake City, Utah

I'm in SLC I'm growing malbec, tempranillo, tannat and baco noir. The malbecs are doing the best. The tannats are also doing well but in a short season they may not get fully ripe. The bacos are a hybrid and are also doing well. I like the tempranillos but they are a little more finicky...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

Sprayed cease and milstop yesterday. Didn't see any mildew but the neighbors roses are covered with it. I wonder about the shelf life of the cease and milstop (official number is 3 years). I just don't use very much, it is now 4 years old and I have a lot left plus it is relatively expensive...

    Cart for my backpack sprayer

I lug around a 3 gallon tank with a hand pump. I had to stop and rest far too many times. Maybe some wheels would help me too.

Some vines dead on top half

I've got a tempranillo that was in a wet spot. It was super slow to start 1 wet year and I thought it was dead. It mostly recovered and has been doing fine. I rerouted some gutters to reduce water at the location and dug a post hole a few ft away and didn't fill it with anything (hoping it...
