    My second "non-car" project

While waiting for parts, I was looking at the new tire fitment issues. I couldn’t find longer studs that were the same width and pitch, but longer and it would be best to not use spacers. I ended up removing the fenders and the top deck. This still gives me a good base, lowers the center of...

    My second "non-car" project

I could pretty much tell when driving the go kart around that it was struggling when under load, like going up hill. I measured the voltage of the two batteries, one was 12.7, the other 12.4. I took them to the local auto store, who can test them under load and they both failed. Ordered $218...

    My second "non-car" project

I found that Honda 50 Monkey off road knobby tires will fit these rims and the rim can accommodate an inner tube. The Honda tire is a half inch wider and a little taller, so some spacers and fender modification or removal are probably in order. I removed the lug studs to find ones a 1/4...

    My second "non-car" project

Prior to wine making, my main hobby was restoring '60's era cars. Mostly Fords and British sports cars. When we bought some property 2 years ago, I sold my 3/4 finished project car (Sunbeam Alpine with Ford V6) so I could focus on getting the property and the vineyard back in shape. With 4...

    Replicating a 100 point wine...this season’s plan

The 100 point Cab Franc received a Silver at the State Fair. All 3 judges scored it a Silver. I think it is the best wine I’ve made. I have a handful of bottles left and it is still good, but not as good as it was a few years ago. The aging was noted by one of the judges, so I think overall...

My Vines’ leaves are turning red/brown! Help!

I have 3 vines with this, which I attribute to red blotch.

My Vines’ leaves are turning red/brown! Help!

UCD has a lab. I’ll take a pic of a vine with red blotch in my vineyard, which is what is common when Ive seen discoloration like this. Yours looks different to me though.

My Vines’ leaves are turning red/brown! Help!

There are a lot of mineral deficiencies that can cause red color in leaves. I have a few vines with red blotch, but I don’t think that is what you have.

    Bottling

If you taste the wine, is there an effervescence? A tingly fizzy feeling? I typically will not bottle a wine for at least 3-4 months (white wine) after I would see activity in an airlock. It is always much safer to give it time.

    2023, What are your plans?

My hope is that I would get enough of Zin/Syrah out of the vineyard (close to 50/50) to fill a 60 gallon barrel.

    2023, What are your plans?

The front yard vineyard is loaded with fruit, making me rethink my plans on doing a rose with the Zin. How do you think a Zin/Syrah blend would taste?

Making the softest Petite Sirah possible

I entered the Petite Sirah in the CA state fair. They have not had the home wine making contest since 2020, so there were a lot of wines entered. The wine did not meet the 75% varietal rule to enter it as a Petite Sirah, so the category it fit into was Rhone Blend. When I think of a Rhone...

Viognier collective is on for 2023! Style decisions

I will be looking at 70 gallons of juice to start to net 60, + enough for racking and topping. I will definitely have one ferment in the barrel and one outside it as well, but it will be small compared to the barrel. I'm going to be very stingy on the oak; I want to try to keep as much of the...

Viognier collective is on for 2023! Style decisions

Yes, juice from a large Lodi commercial grape juice and bulk wine seller. It is 100% varietal viognier.

Red grape yield after pressing (Barbera/Sangiovese)

I figure 15.5 lbs of grapes per finished gallon of wine as a general planning rule. This of course depends on the grapes. I found that 5-6 gallons out of a 60 gallon net wine for light and medium body varietals makes a difference you can taste.

Viognier collective is on for 2023! Style decisions

I looked at my barrel fermented Chardonnay from last year. It only took 5 days from inoculation to completion. Hoping for twice as long this year.

    Mandarin-pee, not the best review

My neighbor is an 85 year old, still farming his commercial mandarin orchard. He gives me bags and bags of mandarins during the season. In return I give him wine and jam I’ve made from the mandarins. At the end of last season he had a lot left over and I said if he would make juice, I’d make a...
