    Vineyard Floor Opinions Please

I try to keep my vineyard as chemically clean as possible. Not necessarily organic - but on that end of the spectrum. So I mow the aisles and weed eat between the plants. I hand pull weeds close to the vine when they either annoy me or start to annoy the vines - e.g. get a foot tall or higher…...

    How Many Varieties to Start?

We planted our vineyard April / May of 2022. In deciding what to plant, we worked backwards from what we wanted to make - and how much of that variety. So, for example, we wanted to make a GSM. We knew we would be heavier on the Syrah and Grenache and lighter on the Mourvèdre - probably a 40%...

    Fermenting Friends ~ wine clubs

I thought perhaps I’d share about my local club here in the Paso Robles CA. Founded in 1979, Wines and Steins has 141 members drawn together by an interest in wine and or beer. We have monthly meetings, most with a speaker from the local wine or beer community with a pot luck dinner and an...

    Starting a new vineyard

Grenache - which was frost damaged - is all over the map… Blossoms Mega clusters And everything in between. For the most part, clusters are behind rest of the varieties with very small berries. For now I’m in wait and see mode but probably will do some serious thinning down the road to...

    Starting a new vineyard

So I was out in the vineyard this afternoon, following the shoot thinning and generally assessing the potential crop. It looks really good - I’m probably going to drop some clusters especially in the Syrah and Primitivo zones as both seem to have set quite a bit of fruit. Syrah Primo

So we finished shoot thinning today. Thinnings got thrown in the aisles - I’ll mow them this week sometime

    Noiret vine dying

Lucky you - no gophers… I fight a daily battle with them. Hmm - any damage to the vine bark - especially down near where it enters the soil? Perhaps some critter chewed through the bark layer and has disrupted the flow of moisture through the vine.

Any signs of gophers? A little tug on the trunk will tell you if they have been around... :(

    Shoot thinning by professionals

Tablas Creek just posted a before and after shot of shoot thinning in their vineyard. I’m always afraid of going too far so found these two shots to be helpful in being bold…. Before And after

The pile of rocks below the stake all came out of the hole by the stake. The largest being 12x12x24 but many others the size of a football or volleyball

This is what you might find in one hole when planting a vineyard. Orange tube at top is 24 inches long.

    Overwintering Phomopsis

Well, that stinks… I don’t know anything you can do about it in season other than what you are already doing. Perhaps going through monthly and pruning out any hot spots, trying to minimize the spread. If you do that, be sure to sanitize your pruners either with a bleach solution or with rubbing...

    New Home Vineyard

Welcome to WMT! If you scroll down the list of forums, you will see “Grape Growing & Vineyard Forum”. Can this vine survive?

Definitely true. My potted vines got 1 gallon of water twice a week - three times a week during hotter summer weeks. Make sure pots drain well! I should point out that by 18 months in 5 gallon pots, my vines were busting out the bottoms of the pots… So long term, you’ll need to find a place to...

    Can this vine survive?

Grapes are pretty hardy - I think it will re sprout. You’ll want to figure out what ate the buds and then protect the vine appropriately.
