    Starting a new vineyard

Well, it’s been quite a winter. Normal rainfall here is 18 inches from July 1 - June 30th. Well, the total on my rain gauge is 32 inches - and another 2 inches is supposed to come this week. The biggest day, January 9th we had more than 8 inches. Why more than? Well it rained all night and my...

Storing wine corks for future years

One of the wine making groups that I am a part of makes larger batches of wine and thus tends to buy supplies in bulk. For example, in 2022 we made about 170 gallons of Syrah and are potentially making another similar batch this year. We are having an email dialog about when to purchase corks...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

That is one heck of a winter picture to this Coastal California kid…. I will say - I’ve experienced that attitude adjustment many times in the last year - something about being outside in a vineyard just wipes my negativity away.

    Wine untouched by wood

You could also look for wines which are made using the thousands of years old approach of Amphorae. Amphorae are huge clay pots - shaped somewhat like a vase. Wines are made within these pots and never touch wood. You can find them in wines from California, Spain, Italy, and the country of Georgia.

Could you perhaps run some petiole or soil tests and then plant a cover crop in the aisles to regenerate the soil?

    Need help...with wine room design

A few questions rather than any answers: What activities will you be doing in this room? Crushing grapes? Primary Fermentation? Secondary fermentation? Bottling? Storing bottled wine? Performing tests? Storing wine making equipment? Cleaning?

    What's new in your cellar?

Like everything in the wine industry in Paso Robles, rumors spread quickly and widely - I first heard it in late August or early September when I was out shopping for grapes for my wine making group. Too bad about the heirs not wanting to step in - I know he has a son with a winery in Southern...

A whole bunch of fabulous wine in this selection. Enjoy the Denner - they were purchased by Gallo - announced this morning (rumor has been going around for a while).

    Starting a new vineyard

Hi Joe - Glad you are enjoying the thread... It has been fun documenting our journey here - and I have gotten some great feedback along the way. Oh I am sure that the Grenache will bounce back - It has had about 6 weeks of growth without the nightly pruning. So I figure it can sleep all winter...

And lastly the carignane- probably the biggest trunks and the most stubborn about growing grapes this year - I’m still finding new clusters
