Time to find the wild elderberry

I went out yesterday and found about 5 lbs. a lot of the plants were bent over like Dave said. I went to a spot that was loaded with bushes, but someone else got them. Between the birds and other winemakers you gotta be quick.

Opening a winery and vineyards--lessons learned?

last year i pitched Avante yeast in my itasca must and didn't realize it was no longer viable. The natural yeast on the grapes began fermenting so i didn't realize my commercial yeast was dead. by the time i realized what happened i lost all my white wine to a horrible smelly natural yeast. I...

Have you reached out to any university extension office? My extension dept is quite helpful with these issues.

    Spindly unpopulated clusters

Could’ve been the weather during pollination or a mineral deficiency. Or grape leaf flea beetle, lots of reasons.

Pleated water filter for removing yeast

I did not refilled it. It tastes ok, the plum wine lost some flavor. The wine might be ok, there’s hardly any sugar in it.

Pleated water filter for removing yeast

Update , after a couple months the filtered wine has begun to slightly ferment in the bottle. No more trials like this. I have about thirty bottles that need to be drunk very soon. So my neighbors will be getting bottles of wine tomorrow.

As I’ve been driving around I’ve noticed the elderberry bushes are ripe now. Time to get out and harvest. This year I’m going to pick and freeze the berries for a winter project.

    The 2024 crop year

This is how uneven mine are. I don’t think I’m over cropping the vines, I guess I’ll find out in a month or so.

    The 2024 crop year

Grapes look great, does Foch complete veraison uniformly? It takes my Marquette about three weeks for all the clusters to completely color.

    Post a photo, any photo

My wife blew a stop sign on her birthday. She’s ok, some small fractures and bruising. Thought I’d share pics of the car. The car that hit her basically sheared off the front end. All the airbags went off saving my wife from serious injury.

    Veraison has started

That’s one thing I don’t have to worry about. Are you in an area that has lots of birds due to farm fields? If not you can probably use a couple fake owls.

Observations from the vineyard this season

Marquette can be made into a very good wine. I’ve also tasted very bad Marquette. I’ve tried Marquette wine from grapes grown in clay soil, loamy soil and sand and they all taste different. Like any wine it starts in the vineyard.
