    Topping up barrel question

I’ve had my 2023 Marquette in Hungarian 10 gallon barrels since last October and have been topping them up every month with wine. I’m going to bottle it all this September. My question is can I skip the next couple tops or will that be too long on the oxygen in the barrel? I would like to...

    Result of using bourbon barrel

Updating my original observation. I recently bottled the bourbon barrel wine. It now tastes very good, I sterile filtered it and added a bit of sugar. I can taste bourbon a little bit but also a little vanilla, another year it should be very good.

    Home Vineyard-Year 3

I’ve seen three so far, they are coming! Maybe all this rain has helped kill some grubs. Last year wasn’t bad.

    Are my vines over clustered???

Marquette can handle as much as 25 lbs per vine from my experience. Last year I thinned a couple rows to one cluster per shoot ans an experiment and it didn’t make a difference . Vern tried the same thing once and he had the same result. Your three year old vines don’t have the root system yet...

Any idea what the yellowing leaves could be?

Check out lodigrowers.com, they have a great article with images and descriptions of mineral deficiencies.

My canopy is bigger than your canopy

Having a short growing season I believe in making as much sugar available as fast as possible for my hybrid grapes. So I encourage a large canopy, yet still thin around the clusters. I noticed when I was in California last year the vines were trimmed like poodle dogs. That would never work for...

    How Many Varieties to Start?

I’ve been growing Marquette for 8 years in northern Wisconsin and it’s very versatile. You can barrel age it, carboy age it, add oak or not. Highly recommend putting it thru MLF and cold crashing it also. My wine is now very good and I recently tasted a version at a winery that was just...

    Tape machine

They all look the same , Amazon has one for $29. Plant Tying Machine I had three staple jams doing my entire vineyard mostly because I had the device crooked or a leaf got in the way. I suggest you carry a small needle nose with you.

    2024 grape growing progress

Grapes look great. I have good luck with generic tebuconazole as a systemic.

    Tape machine

My wife bought me a tape tying machine and it works pretty good. I tied up all the wayward shoots in the vineyard in a couple hours. The tape won’t hold heavy ripe grapes, but it gets the shoots to the wire where the tendrils will wrap around and support the vine better.

Hand applied 28-400 screw top bottles and caps

if they are laid down you can see a leak if it happens.

Potassium bicarbonate for reducing acidity in must.

Gentle stirring is all you need. You can add more than 1g/l without any perceptible salty taste until you get up around 4 or 5 g/l. You do blow off some aromas tho when you add it as it really foams a lot.

    Super wet spring

For systemic I use Phostrol and tebuconazole. For early sprays I use mancozeb , sulfur and captan. This is the wettest year since I’ve lived here. I did get out and spray yesterday. Due to heavy rainfall I’ve sprayed every 6 to 10 days.

    Super wet spring

In the last month I’ve had 16” of rain in the vineyard. The vines are growing in every direction except where I want them to. I did a horrible job pruning over the winter. Yesterday and today i thinned leaves in the rain so I could spray today. I sprayed captan and sulfur. I’ve been using...

Pleated water filter for removing yeast

I do sanitize everything, I guess time will tell. Ethanol is a good idea. Thanks for the feedback

Pleated water filter for removing yeast

A month ago I filtered and sweetened my plum wine. The wine had cleared since September , anyway I used this filter. Any chance it actually removed any stray yeast? There isn’t any fermentation yet.

Hand applied 28-400 screw top bottles and caps

A few years ago I switched to the screw top bottles for time savings and ease of use. They are more expensive at about $2 a bottle, but it’s so nice not to have to cork bottles when doing dozens of bottles. Occasionly one will leak and it usually just needs a little more torque. As far as...
