    Hail damage

Had that happen on the average of about once every three years. This year, so far so good! The spot where they got hit will just heal a bit, but usually there will be seeds sticking out the wound, and a very small amount of juice in the grape. Unfortunately in the midwest, we have that happen...

Anyone have experience (good or bad) with chickens in the vineyard?

I have a flock of guineas and let them out almost everyday. I have no trouble while they patrol the whole place and eat bugs. Also have six hen at presant, and neither have bothered the grapes, june berries and other types of plants around the place. Plus they double as an alarm. Whenever...

Is muscadine root compatible with other vitis?

I'm gonna take a stab at this and say no. I have done a bit of research through the years, and I believe that muscadines have a different chrommazone count. I really doubt they would be able to be grafted.

    Netting to keep birds away

I bought netting at Lowes, but was not wide enough, so I ask my bride to sew them together. Worked very well. She used nylon thread and run it through her sewing machine. It took a bit of time, but was strong and had no issues. The year before, the birds got a big share of the crop!

Advice needed - planting in zone 4a/4b Northern Wisconsin?

I was so looking forward to getting a taste of verona this year, then it was hit with the farmers drift. Killed some back a little last summer, then when I pruned this spring, I found green wood on. most of them. Cut them back, and almost half never came out at bud break. There have been...

I'm looking for Norton/Cynthiana clippings or root stock

Wrong time of the year for cuttings. Norton are hard to root species anyway, so you will have to wait. If you want ten vines, you better start a lot of them when you do, as the rooting rate for them is a pita. My best luck has been rooting hammer cuttings, seems to be a little more stored...

    Replacement for cabernet sauvignon

I ask that very question back about 14 years ago and was told norton. I have made some respectable wines from norton, but it's a high acid grape, as is most of the hybrids. I planted verona three years ago, and was hoping for enough to try, but the farmers around here had other ideas! Ended...

    Marquette versus Frontenac

My verona suffered the spraying incident last spring, and lost nearly half. There have been a few vines that have come back out at grround level, but are starting over again! When I pruned this spring, they still had green wood, same with my concord and cataba, butdidn't lose as big of...

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

Sounds like you got it figured out, Dennis. Gotta love /hate trash pandas! They are survivors, like most of our wildlife in this country. The worst thing you can do for any wildlife is fail to manage it wisely!

    Is this cutworm damage?

Thank you for that info, Kevin!

    Is this cutworm damage?

I've also had that happen to a couple of slow growers, but it's definately not cut worms. Cut worm damage I have always had was cut off at ground level. I thought maybe a deer browsing, but have no good answers for you or me!

WTG bud! I guarantee you won't hurt the population!

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

For their size, I would place ***** as one of the toughest critters on the planet. A 25 pound **** has no fear of anything when cornered, and will take on all comers! They have twenty small daggars (claws) and a mouthful of teeth, and those dang rear feet turn 180 degrees from normal, so they...

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

I agree that excluding wildlife is the best way....untill that don't work. That will take care of the problem most of the time. I had to catch and kill a **** this morning, as yesterday, went down to feed the ducks, guineas, and chickens. Two dead guineas half pulled through the fencing, and...

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

Surely as a landowner, you can protect your property! Here, if a critter is doing damage, you can take care of the problem, unless it is deer or turkeys, their prize game animals. But still, if you get an officer involved, they will issue you a take tag, even on their game critters. One of...

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

Kevin, if your going to use a foot trap, don't go bigger than a 1 1/2 size for **** and possum. You get too big, you can end up with foot damage more than you like. I trap all winter every year and catch hundreds of **** an coyotes, so If you need sugestions, I'm your huckelberry! lol

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

Kevin, they are easy to trap. Come to anything stinky! Easy to catch in those DP traps that you showed in your post. ***** and possums come easy in those, baited with mini marshmallows with some molasses or jack mackerel on the marshmallows. Like I said, drop in a plastic bag after dispatch...

    Critter thread. Birds, Raccoons, Deer?

Man up and trap and kill the dang things. If your worried about neighbors with nose trouble, do it behind a wall or movable shed. ***** are scared of nothing, they are the toughest critter living in your city, just take care of the problem. Put their carcass in a plastic trash bag and send it...

    Are these vines OK?

You will likely need more than you have at present. I'm a welder, so I built my trellis out of pipe, and set it four feet in the ground with four bags of sackcrete per end post and brace. I have one that is pulling the end post up out of the ground. Thought my deal was bullit pruff....guess not!

Here is an interesting antidote for birds.

Mockingbirds have been a biggie for me in the past, on my frontenac and nortons.
