    New Product for Removing Labels

I put a couple of tablespoons of water in the bottle. Put the bottle in the microwave on its side and zap it for 1 minute on high. Remove the bottle with a gloved hand, empty the hot water and pick up the corner of the label with a sharp knife point. The label generally peels right off with...

    Need antique hydrometer help

Check on what Winemaker 81 and Jovimaple said. I store my extra hydrometer and thermometer in a section of 3/4” (or whatever diameter fits your instruments) PVC tubing. I cut the sections a little longer than necessary, pad the interior ends with papertowling for cushioning and cap with the...

Time lag for bottling after backsweetening?

Thanks, appreciate the varying thoughts. Seems about evenly split between a lag time and immediate bottling. I experienced bottle grenades on one occasion back in my early winemaking career. I learned fast for a boy my age and since then, I've either been good - right amt of fresh sorbate or...

Time lag for bottling after backsweetening?

Do you feel a certain length of time should be allowed after K-Meta, sorbate and the sweeting agent (in that order) is added to the wine to ensure no re-fermentation occurs OR do you think the action of the sorbate is basically “immediate” and that bottling may proceed without a “waiting...

Is my "wine rule" cheat sheet pullin’ a fast one?

Thanks for the input. Luckily, I've never exceeded the 1/4 tsp/5 gal rule of thumb. I removed the errant reference from the cheat sheet. Guess I got careless during input years ago.

    My first bottling

I have used multiple bottle fillers over the several decades I've been a winemaker. When my old homemade vac. pump died , I purchased the Professional AIO pump and Premium Bottle Filler and absolutely LOVE it!!:db Once you get the feel of it, you'll fill every bottle to exactly the same level...

Is my "wine rule" cheat sheet pullin’ a fast one?

I maintain a “down and dirty” cheat sheet for quick reference. I was reviewing this morning and ran across an entry indicating that one can add 1 tsp of K-Meta/ 5 gals at bottling. I routinely add 1/4 tsp / 5gals at bottling to add aprox. 50ppm. I also add 0.4g at each rack. I have no...

How I want to be remembered

I hope when I inevitably choke to death on gummy bears from Halloween, people will just say I was killed by bears and leave it at that.

Oops- guess the goblins are after me!

Thanks Guys, It's my traditional muscadine wine (one of Bryan's favorites since he moved South! 🤣). I used Lalvin RC-212 which has medium nutritional needs. The fermentation is slowing a little but still dropped from 1.052 to 1.012 overnight. I was a little concerned about feeding "bugs"if I...

Oops- guess the goblins are after me!

I was supposed to add the remaining 10tsp of nutrient at S/G 1.073 but totally forgot -ugh!:m S/G this morning is 1.012. Would you recommend adding the full remaining dose of nutrient at this point; 1/2 dose, or just let it ride and take corrective action later if the fermentation sticks at...

How to Make HOMEMADE WINE Like Farmers in Italy

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall in your youth Rocky. Agostino - my neighbor - has relayed some very interesting winemaking stories like you. Guess it's like the old adage; "wine makes itself, you just need to get out of the way". I have always been interested in the "old way" of...
