    Normacorc lesson learned

Thanks!! This bottling will be my first with normacorcs and I have always soaked the corks prior to use. Your posting saved me some unwanted experience. Another good example of the wealth of information to be gleaned on WMT by all. BTW, my grandfather used to tell me that "Experience is what...

    I know we’re a wineMAKING forum but -

Two of our friends vacationed in Umbria in September. One night while dining in a small family restaurant, the host selected a bottle of Sangiovese for them. They were impressed with the wine but failed to get any information, ship a case home or even worse, to send me a bottle!! They did...

White wine from juice - 3 weeks and about to rack

Thanks Bryan, certainly food for thought and I do plan to backsweeten but hopefully not have to use as much sugar as a "down and dirty" bench trail last week required! I have an unheated utility building that is shaded most of the day. I may try to stash one of the carboys there once we reach...

White wine from juice - 3 weeks and about to rack

Bryan, in your experience, is there a general "rule of thumb" concerning how much acid (g/L) cold stabilization will reduce; I know there are few hard and fast rules in winemaking; however, some of my muscadine finished in the range of pH 2.9 (don't do titration) and that's far too sharp . Have...

    Jack Keller Home winemaking

Dawg's got it; I'm so old the Dead Sea wasn't even sick when I was a kid!!!!:D The up side is as I tell my great nephew: "Be careful, there's a reason I'm this old"!!!!

    Jack Keller Home winemaking

Other than spraying and keeping fallen leaves raked up, not much else you can do from what I've read. I don't do either and still have more than enough fruit to make preserves and pies. My tree is bumping 50 yrs of age so may have some degree of immunity.

    Jack Keller Home winemaking

I have Jack's book and have found it a worthwhile addition to my wine making library. He is a little light on the base ingredients in most cases but the recipes and techniques are solid. I recommend it especially for beginners. I actually contacted Jack a number of years ago concerning...

    Free run tube - YEA!!

Racked about 20 gals of muscadine wine from primary this morning and was incredibly happy with Steve's Free Run Tube!!:db:db I simply "dug" a hole in the cap and inserted the free run tube with the strainer bag, dropped the racking cane in the tube and turned on the pump. Even my better half...

    Headspace eliminator

Hope it helps. FWIW, pulling just enough vacuum to collapse the bulb is all that's needed. I got carried away the first couple of times I used them. I've got an old diy pump that will pull 5 lbs of vacuum on an onion sack!!!!🤣

    Headspace eliminator

Believe Steve says the bulb may stick if under a vacuum for an extended time. He recommends that you rinse the inside of the bulb with a little sanitizer as a precaution. Only had one to stick and this took care of it. I caught it on my weekly inspection and no harm was done. All of mine are...

All good things must come to an end.

After 5 yrs of great service, my homemade muscadine crusher finally gave up the ghost - in the middle of the crush I might add!:slp:m I checked with a good friend at Alternative Beverage, ebrew.com (my go to brew shop) to see if there were any rentals available. There were none but we did...

Making wine out of poisonous berries?

I would NEVER attempt a wine from anything even remotely poisonous. There are too may other safe bases out there. And just because an animal eats a poisonous plant doesn't mean that its safe for human consumption- that's an old wife's tale and one of the primary rules for foraging...

Transfer and separate from skins out of a large fermentor

Check out the "Free Run Tube" that Steve sells at Allinonewinepump. Bought one 2 wks ago for use in this year's fermentation but haven't had a chance to use it yet; sure it will work fine. Give Steve a call and discuss. He's a top notch guy to do business with and his customer service is...
