Should I ignore sugar content on juice labels and just take a hydrometer reading?

Another example where the label isn't accurate: Aldi orange juice... This orange juice now has different packaging and it says it's got 12.1g sugar/150ml which equates to 81g/L. The old juice used to say 16g sugar/150ml which comes out to 107g/L. That's quite a difference and yet the new...

Stalling Cranberry, temp OK, pH OK...

After three weeks fermenting it's still only managed to drop to 1.042 SG (12.4% ABV). It has about the same sugar levels as Coca-Cola. It's too sweet for me but I'm just going to bottle it and have done with it. I worked out it's got about 6.4 teaspoons of sugar in a 230ml serving (that size...

Stalling Cranberry, temp OK, pH OK...

When I test the orange I do (that ferments like a madman) that is also 1.048 SG on both hydrometers, so it averages out at around 140g/L. That orange juice label says 16g/150ml which is 107g/L so again that's way off compared to the two hydrometers. Maybe they are only listing the sugar they add...

Stalling Cranberry, temp OK, pH OK...

Similar to my findings. The label says 94g/L but it comes out at 1.048 SG which is more like 130g/L on my S1011 hydrometer and 150g/L on the S1310 hydrometer.

Stalling Cranberry, temp OK, pH OK...

Cheers folks. I just threw in 0.5 tsp of yeast and nutrient and will see what's what in a few days. It's a shame the SG was so high, because I could just salvage it now and have a lower ABV, after all it's around 12% which is OK, but it's just too sweet to drink, at 1.048 SG. I don't know why...

How Much Wine Do You Drink?

I don't drink every night, but have done the odd time. That's when I wake up the 2nd day and feel pretty rough! I ended up making a calc to work out how many pints of beer my wine equates to if it was 5% ABV (otherwise I can't keep track of how much I'm drinking) and I generally stick to around...

Stalling Cranberry, temp OK, pH OK...

I started cranberry off 18 days ago and it's been slow the whole time. I accidentally started it off with a high sg (1.135) and initially I assumed that was why it wasn't getting going, but on days 2/3/4/5 it was fizzing away quite well, compared to how it is now after 18 days. It's at around...

0.126 SG to 0.992 SG in 5 days!

I blame the room then. It's at 22°C most of the time with the odd increase to 24°C. It's March, near freezing out, but I have seen the odd fruit fly hovering around it. I think I got lucky with this one.

0.126 SG to 0.992 SG in 5 days!

I don't know if this is common, but I was surprised by it. 1KG of sugar in 3800ml of orange juice (that had 16g/150ml sugar originally). I'm drinking it now, it's dry and hitting pretty hard! I am using Young's Super Wine Yeast High Alcohol + Nutrient + Pectolase + Bentonite. All made by...

Should I ignore sugar content on juice labels and just take a hydrometer reading?

This cranberry is almost mocking me compared to the orange juice wine I made previously. Put it this way, the orange juice went from no alcohol at 1.120 SG, to me syphoning it off 6 days later at 0.994 SG and (presumably) at least 15% ABV - whereas this cranberry is a whole other ball game...

Should I ignore sugar content on juice labels and just take a hydrometer reading?

I got some Cranberry juice and on the label, the sugar content says 9.4g in 100ml, so 94g per Liter. Measuring with two different hydrometers (that I checked read 1.000 in water at 20°C) the juice measured 1.050 SG which according to the scale and a table I found online, it's more like 136g...

Two hydrometers have different PA at the same SG?

I have been asking Chat GPT and it doesn't know either. Since hydrometer S1011 predicts a higher PA at 1.100 SG, then it would have me not adding as much sugar as the S1310 would have me adding, to get the same ABV. I'll just play it safe and use the one that tells me to add more sugar, because...

Two hydrometers have different PA at the same SG?

Stevenson Reeves S1011 hydrometer: 1.100 SG = 15.9% PA (and 1.050 SG = 8.1% PA). Stevenson Reeves S1310 hydrometer: 1.100 SG = 13.5% PA (and 1.050 SG = 6.6% PA). Both made by the same company, both "suitable for both wine and beer". Can anyone explain why the scales differ like this? Both are...

Hello folks, embarking upon my 4th batch soon...

I went from demijohns to buckets to demijohns in my first 3 batches. I don't like the idea of transferring from buckets after primary to demijohns for secondary. The ideal container would be a reasonably thick plastic bucket that doesn't bulge under pressure, where a bung can be put in for a...

Hello folks, embarking upon my 4th batch soon...

I'm using the "Classic" Ocean Spray Cranberry, there's no preservatives listed in the ingredients. "Water, Cranberry juice from cranberry juice concentrate (27%), Sugar, Vitamin C, Carrot concentrate and Cranberry concentrate." The label says 9.3g sugar/100ml but my hydrometer said the juice...

Hello folks, embarking upon my 4th batch soon...

Hello. I've been making a few batches of wine as a total beginner and each one has turned out well. The only problem is I am drinking it faster than I am making it 😄 My next batch will be made from Ocean Spray Cranberry juice... 16L this time. I'm aiming at max ABV as usual so it's going to...
