Primary Fermenter Sizes for Large Must Volumes

I have a 6ish (possibly 7?) gallon FG bucket I was sold for primary fermenting 5 gallon batches. I started my first 5 gallon batch of fruit wine today and it became IMMEDIATELY obvious part way in that this container was far to small for 5 gallons of water and 19 lbs of fruit. Duh. I got about...

    Logging and Documenting

Hi! I'm new and was just asking about this, but I use an online program called Notion. I have a template I built that is easy for me to quickly see what's what and where its at. Its super customizable and a lot easier on the eyes than a spreadsheet. The features I like best are: It can has a...

I don't, but I will be sure to pick one up at our local shop.

    Blueberry Lavender

Thank you! I hadn't thought of the bench trial but that's genius! And thank you for all the tips with the blueberry wine. I've not been having great luck with my blueberry plants so this might end up as a Serviceberry/Juneberry Lavender wine but I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

    Blueberry Lavender

That's the rub- I don't have a recipe that actually includes the lavender. Just an idea in my head based on what I think should be a great flavor combo. I have a recipe in mind (Terry Garey's Sal's Blueberry Wine with the volume of blueberries bumped up) and was considering making a cold...

    Starting a new vineyard

Oh I get all that stuff, I just didn't know vineyards were amended! Something, something about how my brain understood terroir and growing grapes hard just added up to not amending. Now I know! Thanks!

I seriously love those cat labels... I only have two cats though... might have to get some more? You know, for label purposes...

    Blueberry Lavender

Alright, I've found the thread on lavender wines and cold extraction, but I can't seem to find any specific recipes for a lavender-blueberry wine. I know I can tweak a blueberry recipe to add in the lavender, but how much/where would you start for a 1 gallon batch? I don't want it ending up...

    Lees & Pomace

So,what do y'all do with your leftover "stuff"? I've been just tossing it in the compost but we're looking to get some poultry and I'm wondering if any of it would be safe for ducks to nosh on? I'm assuming you'd have to leave the Pomace out to dry and evaporate out most of the alcohol. But I...

    DIY Labels, not computer generated?

Cats on wine labels is always the right answer!

    DIY Labels, not computer generated?

That was part of my concern with having a whole bunch printed out a) cost and b) wanting something different for each batch (plus knowing some batches might only ever be 5 bottles). I got these at WalMart/Staples/Amazon and since they are paper, the watercolors work really nicely. I think they...

    Organization (Recipes and Notes)

Your laminated tags look great! I agree, I need reminders of where everything is at, what's coming due or ready to bottle!

    DIY Labels, not computer generated?

Is anyone doing DIY labels without a computer and printer? I'd love to see examples! I've started doing mine this way as a) a "artistic" outlet and b) I get lost in rabbit holes of graphics and fonts and this prevents all that wasted time of making 14 different iterations of one label. I had the...

    Starting a new vineyard

I'm in Wisconsin so I have no idea (specifically) what California soils are like, but is it common to amend the soil for wine grapes? Will you continue to amend after the initial application?
