    Sheep Fleece

You must not spend much time with vegans. Else you would have gotten my joke. :D Unless the sheep are not roaming free, outside a fence, it may be imprisonment. That may be the belief of some. Even applies to gold fish in a bowl: ".....goldfish are bred in tanks which are often...

    Sheep Fleece

Now.... The big question..... If one uses sheep fleece, would the wine be vegan..... Only the sheep may know....

NY Times: The American wine industry has an old people problem

Best comment. Maybe the wine industry does not have an age issue, but simply a marketing issue. Old people tend to have more money than young people, so maybe some marketers spend too much time on that demographic. So maybe the marketing is badly skewed to try to grab some of that known old...

So how much alcohol is REALLY in my wine?

My first year college chemistry professor like to tell a story. When he was working his way through college. He did titrations as a job. And he only did one. Why? He said if he did two, the second one was always just a little different. So if he did two, he had to do three to prove his first one...

    Why I Hate Winemaking

To become a millionaire, begin with a billion and start a winery.....

Is anyone else getting this popup?

Yes, I did. But not in the past few days. Maybe not since you posted your question. Maybe the site admins can explain this. Was it by design for ad revenue*, or a hack? I ask, since I had no idea what a "kegerator" was and had to look it up -- and it apparently has nothing to do with wine...

So how much alcohol is REALLY in my wine?

As are other crops, which are actually easier to grow. I have been upping my lettuce volumnes in the past few years..... Global trend. And I do not even now live in the USA. :h "The US lettuce and chicory market is forecasted to reach US$5.09 billion in 2026" Source: US Lettuce & Chicory...

So how much alcohol is REALLY in my wine?

This answer I provide is very basic. Goes back to my clients who often wanted a cheap, fast solution. I told them the old reality: You can have it quick, cheap or accurate. Pick any two. So : 1) Cheap and Quick: use a vinometer. It will give you a quick answer of questionable accuracy. They...

Hi from Eden Valley South Australia

A good Riesling has a naturally long shelf life. Because a good Riesling's self life has a lot to do with its natural acidity. Nothing else needed. A bad Riesling... well that is another issue.

    Why I Hate Winemaking

LOL!! :D Excellent. So true. Now consider, I have to often do this outside, in the winter.... near freezing. And my containers (up to 200 L) are a heck of a lot bigger!!!!

VinesnBines deleted the post I replied to. So in mutual respect, I am editing and thus deleting my reply. What is in the past should remain in the past.

Hi from Eden Valley South Australia

Grapes can yield 4 to 8 tons* per acre.... if well managed. If you are just starting out, I hope you have a lot of kegs or not so productive vines.... Hopes for what works for you. * 1 ton of grapes will be about 120 gallons, or about 450 liters of wine.** ** Riesling often has lower...

Hi from Eden Valley South Australia

Absolutely. Good advice. For an aromatic white wine like Riesling? I would not. No. Open air container: Too much chance for air contact/oxidation. Large container: Too much chance for too hot fermentation.

Pruning / Training Help 101 - Community Thread

Vinifera wine is best grown as a vertical shoot system. So low wire as it base. 1st year planting? These vines are too young to start either a cordon or a cane. I recommend cutting just below the bottom wire. Leave 4 buds at the top. Strip off all below that. Then let those grow this year. You...

Storing wine corks for future years

I have kept dry corks in zip lock bags for years and they were "okay". Well... sort of... As in some were. Others were full of mold. Sometimes in less than a year. Same corks. Purchased at same time. Same types of bags. Maybe my cellar is too wet. So variables matter... I assume. I do not...

Barrel ageing and wine loss from evaporation.

Side note: Consider spreading out your testings as the wine ages. Every time you test you expose the wine to the environment, and oxygen. For every month after putting into the barrel, I would suggest a minimum of adding at least a week or maybe better two weeks more between testing. Let that...

Storing wine corks for future years

That is about 770 liters. Or given a .75 liter per bottle, 1029 bottles. The simple solution: Just buy 1000 corks, and spread the rest of the wine (about 29 bottles worth) around during your corking festival. Great fun had by all. A much easier solution than trying to "explain things"...

    What are you watching today?

The Mechanical Universe. From Cal Tech: Or rather re-watching it. I saw parts on PBS, many many years ago, but finally now watching the full series.

    Chaptalization

A thread title, and a thread original post content can be different. The post content can allow more latitude. Ergo, I replied to a subset in the original comment about how some wine making issues are "illegal". So the topic thread was about chaptalization, but the topic comment section was...
