Roasted Almond Wine.. It's your goy's fault!

That is funny. Good retort. Any** my post was intended to be also funny. So glad we can laugh together. :) **Edit: Any? Good grief... my own typo. Ahem.... Meant "And" of course.... red faced.... haha. Joke on me. ;)

    kitchen scale recommendations

Have you looked at jewelers scales? They are very accurate. They have to be. To weight gold and diamonds. And some are very reasonably priced. However, there are maybe better ways to scale up weights in wine making that do not need such small scale measurements. So if those might be appropriate...

Roasted Almond Wine.. It's your goy's fault!

I did not realize being a non-jewish gentile would adversely affect wine.... :) I think you might have a typo there. Right?

    Hobbies other than winemaking?

Hobbies? People still have time for hobbies? I use to do model railroading, garden railroading, wood carving, crafting, sculpture, etc. I wrote poetry on occasion. These days... heck. What time I have is used to survive....

    Carboy flaws.

I have two demijohns with large gas inclusion flaws in the glass. I have had them for 20 years. They are fine. No problems. I consider those scratches trivial... Sort of. Read more below. But.... I do not pressure vacuum transfer my wine. So they only have had atmospheric pressure applied. I...

    Looking for orange/maceration winemaking tips

I only use a fine mesh sieve at press time, after fermenting on the skins, to catch larger material. That is what I call "filtered". After that I let the wine fall clear on its own. I add no clarifiers. I do not filter it any more. Clarifying can take two to four months (longest took 5...

Pepper Wine - Black Hungarian - I'm going for it!

Always love to see people experiment and push the boundaries. But... I hope you saved some of that wonderful Hungarian pepper for some winter Fish Soup, Goulash and Pörkölt... Or even some Texas Chili...

    Screw maintenance?

Each to their own plans. Food grade mineral oil is what I would use of course. And thus, to my own experience I find grease too thick for this application. Better used on high stress bearings and chains where constant and continual friction is going to impact and degrade metal surfaces in the...

    Screw maintenance?

Remove the screw. Get a good wire brush for an angle grinder. Clean up the screw to remove rust. Get a small wire brush and clean out the screw holder on the press. Blast both with a lot of air if you have an air compressor. Else, and if not, do all the above on a hot summer day, and use a rag...

looking for cuttings,,, via canada post

Do not know about Canadian law, but the USPS have quite a few laws and regulations about how to mail plant cuttings. To avoid moving pests and diseases in one places across long distances it could not otherwise move unless done by human transportation. These are for good reasons for this and...

    TOO MUCH SPACE?

Buy a bag of marbles, sanitize them, and gently place them into your carboy till the heat space if removed. Edit: If afraid the marbles will break the carboy when dropping (they should not ... but just in case you fear they might), bend a bit of wire (stainless is best, but copper is okayish...

    Foot stomping grapes

Yeah... I know that. Basic economics of scale. That being said.... Where I live, on a wine hill, most every house has a vineyard. Most every house has a wine cellar. Still, nobody uses their feet to process their wine. Size alone is not the issue. Just saying.

    Foot stomping grapes

For me, yes it is a second marketing tactic. But I am an old guy. For the younger crowd, video seems to be the first and only marketing technique. 🙃

    Foot stomping grapes

I live in Europe as an American Expat. Am certainly no expert on "foot stomping" prevalence in Europe. But no one here where I live does it. I have only read about foot stomping still being done in small Spanish and Portugal wineries. But I read about it a lot more recently from the USA. From...

    Foot stomping grapes

Well, you may be right. Or you may simply find his wine best because of cognitive bias. But either is irrelevant. All that matters is you love the wine you choose to drink. For whatever reasons.

    Foot stomping grapes

Yes. But you forgot one thing: Put it all on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok..... That is today, apparently, where the real money (and sucker?) is. Not making real things, like quality wine, just making "content", whatever that may be.....

    Foot stomping grapes

It is not "still" a thing. It is only recently become a "trendy" thing. Modern crushers are probably better at crushing grapes (faster and do not damage seeds). But there will be always some that think using their feet somehow makes the wine better and makes it more marketable and maybe worth...

Large difference between refractometer & hydrometer

Refractometers with built in correction are super laboratory grade and would be much more expensive than $200 (if they exist ?). Before buying tools is best to understand their fitness for purpose and cost benefit ratio. So often I sadly see critique of a tool is often from ignorance about the...

Large difference between refractometer & hydrometer

Refractometers are only accurate on sugar solutions. Once things start to ferment, you can not use them directly. You then have to apply a correction factor.

Minimal leaking in variable capacity lid and dry airlock gasket base need help

Ah.... I understand. And I have similar pains. Living in Central Europe I can not buy many of the products stated here at this forum. A very different retail world in Europe form the USA. And thus, I can not provide much advice, other than to suggest you ask at any local wine making supply...
