    Winemaking containers

Bottled the Cab a couple days ago. Final hydrometer reading was a little more than 0.990. But, it doesn't seem to have much "body". In fact, I think it may taste a bit sour. Other people have told me to "AGE" it a few years. Huh?

    Kit Wine Taste

Interesting discussion. As a newbie, I just finished a 5 gal. wine kit and I don't like the results. The wine seems to have little "body" and is a bit sour. The SV is a little more than 0.990. I'm wondering if I allowed the batch to be exposed to too much air??? And, I assume there is no...

I need to clarify some information I have given. First, I tried to measure the final numbers before racking for the aging process. My best estimate was 0.990 it could be off a little as it was difficult to get the hydrometer to stay in the middle of the tube. Secondly, I reported that I...

This was a 5 gal. kit. It did contain some oak chips. What they do I don't have any idea, flavor? Is it possible to add some chocolate to very slightly enhance the flavor? Thanks for the help

I bought the kit from a local shop. "WinExpert Vintners Reserve". They are out of Ontario, Canada. Just checked the price at the shop and he is charging $72.00.

I goofed! I thought I had replied. Beginning was 1.080. It didn't taste like it had much alcohol in it. It is in a carboy for aging.

The hydrometer read .0990. First reading was 1.090. Does not taste like there is much alcohol. It is in the carboy for aging.

    Juice price

I hope I can drop in here with a question not directly related to your topic. But, you guys seem knowledgable so I thought you might answer a question for me. My favorite Cabernet, before I tried making my wine, was Menage a Trois, Decadence. It is made with cherry, blackberry and it has a...

Not sure about the final racking and beginning aging. Wine was tasted and it seems VERY weak, maybe flat. The SG measured 0.990. I'm assuming this is too high? Any insights?

Wow! A lot of great information. Thanks to you all for your help. Just one more question about avoiding the sediment when siphoning. I have tried to measure the length of the tube I put into the wine, but it seems like I am wasting some wine in trying to avoid the sediment. Any suggestions...

    Winemaking containers

just finished my first 5 gallon kit of Cabernet. Questioning whether or not I should have additional containers. The primary fermentation was done in a 6 gal. Plastic container. This worked okay for adding ingredients, stirring and so on. The next step is where I have a question. I used a 5...

a baffled -- and maybe desperate -- beginner

bshef, After standing and jumping on the cover I was actually able to seal it. I did add a pack of yeast and it made an immediate difference. I will continue to stir and hope for the best. Thanks for the help!

I have removed the top, stirred for a couple of minutes and used the hydrometer. The measurement when I first started was 1.090. After 3 days the hydrometer measured 1.080. Is that good? Bad? Or, meaningless? I did find one boot in the juice!

Yes. I have not sen any bubbling from the air-lock. The cover is not meant to seal (I guess). It's a container made for winemaking and is made in Canada. It has all of the lines for gallons, etc. I have tried to seal the top by using tape around the lid. I have been hesitant to remove the...

a baffled -- and maybe desperate -- beginner

Not a reply, but a somewhat similar concern. I started a 5 gal. kit about 60 hours ago and have yet to see an evidence of perking. Temps have been 69-70 degrees. The kit came with oak chips (2) which I added according to directions, stirred very well added the yeast and covered the container...

how to use a hydrometer for newbies

I'm trying a 1 gal. kit of Pinot Grigio. I'm hoping I didn't measure the first SG correctly, I recorded it as 1.020. I started a 1 gal. kit for my first attempt and I am 6 days in. Could this SG measurement be correct? If so, what will the wine probably taste like? Thanks for any comments.
