Am I the only person who gets annoyyed by recileiving texts, emails, messages in which people end sentences with 3 dots like ....

Having raised two boys (both contributing members of society at this point), I have fond memories of proof-reading their efforts, then telling them to count their punctuation elements, multiple by 10 and "find someplace to put them!" The lack of punctuation has challenged me for awhile.

Did you name your home winery?

Hubby and I are mostly equal - he prompted this hobby in an effort to even the playing field after decades (he has lots of hobbies, I have fewer). Now he encourages production and enjoys the results. I enjoy the process.

Did you name your home winery?

Okay - NorCal's fun stuff is motivating me to revisit the logo idea. Anyone on the forum with a graphic art background and interest in earning some pocket change? Feel free to ping me directly. @mainshipfred - what name did you eventually decide on? Lots of good suggestions.

Did you name your home winery?

Ponder Labs - with a bit of double entendre. Scientist by training, love the science/experimenting perspective of winemaking, and when I am not working or making wine, I am running my two labradors (who have been politely asked not to leave dog hair in the winery, with limited results) Would...

RJ Spagnols RJS Changes - not for the better I think

I live fairly close to the retail location of one of the big boys (Midwest). Just checked their website and noticed that they are sold out of many RJS products right now - looks like there may be a lag between the old and the new. Wondering if I should head to the store to see what is available...

    Old crocks for wimemaking

Agreed. And an excellent case statement for why "communicating science" is mandatory training for my graduate and professional students. Now, back to winemaking because - it is the weekend!

    Old crocks for wimemaking

We have known since Roman times (thousands of years) that lead is toxic in biological systems. There is no known level of lead that does not have negative impact - about the only thing positive thing that could be said is that there should be no overlap in this situation (fermentatng wine) with...

    Totally stupid question....

As someone without the strongest of hands, I have had no problem using the bottle cap opener side of my wine corkscrew. The key is finesse and leverage, not brute force.

Stag's Leap Merlot - low OG

Thanks so much for the advice - up to 1.090 today. Might bump just a tad before pitching yeast tomorrow.

Stag's Leap Merlot - low OG

Started the WE SLM today - added water to 6 gal mark (BMB) per instructions, then added grape skins. OG about an hour after grape skins added was only 1.080, which seems quite low. Haven't pitched yeast yet. Bummed that I should have checked OG before adding all the water as I hate to...

    Timing of racking

Thanks so much - good to know it is not my imagination and that I am safe to wait for the lees to compact some. Common sense says all this would drop out eventually as the wine cleared without lysosome addition, but it is pretty dramatic.

    Timing of racking

Just completed first-time MLF - on a cab juice bucket (OG 1.096; co-inoculated BM 4x4, CH16 24 hours later - used fermentation tannins, lallezyme, Opti-Red, Acting's-ML and Opti-Malo plus on schedule (Brehm's additive pack). Fermented dry (0.995) relatively quickly and left untouched as MLF...

    Women winemakers

Family story here that I cannot quite figure out is the teetotaler great grandmother who "wasted" the wine grapes from their farm by making and storing simple grape juice (much to the chagrin of some distant family members). That said, she pressed the grapes for grape juice and stored in the...

    Women winemakers

Starting a thread as suggested in another conversation - curious how many women winemakers there are on this forum? I have always considered it pretty gender neutral, yet it has been noted that there is a heavy male bias here. How many of us are out there? Are there topics of interest? Different...

    Juice bucket and MLF

Thanks - guess I will toss in the BM 4x4 and we will never know if it contributes anything in the face of EC1118. But no to the kmeta and yes to the rest.

    Juice bucket and MLF

I am picking up a frozen juice bucket (cabernet sauvignon) this week and planning on trying MLF for the first time. Have been through many threads here and appreciate all the good advice I have found. My plan is to use BM4x4 and CH16, co-inculated with appropriate nutrients, as well as some...

    Favorite juice bucket and tweak?

Thanks for taking the time to share these details! Learning to age wine was definitely a gift.

    Favorite juice bucket and tweak?

Thanks! Hadn’t thought about MLF - will be good to add that to my toolbox ~
