    Help with small vineyard planning

I hope not! We have them by the ton, being surrounded by either corn or soy beans. I believe they eat aphids, not grapes or grape leaves. There are spring and fall days when it is unpleasant to be outside because they are so plentiful. What I DO know is that they STINK. When I pick my first...

    Novatwist...I love them

One heck of a weekend!!! Or, not having to buy closures for a while. I find them quicker and more elegant than corks.

    Racoon breaching electric fence netting

I had good luck live trapping with marshmallows as bait. They get nasty when trapped but a blanket helped. Then took them for a long drive to a public forest.

    Anthracnose?

I believe this is Anthracnose (on Marquette) but I will listen to dissenting opinions. Is a Sulphur spray the way to go? I am in Canada and we do not have all the US approved products available. I may visit the nearest Ag Retailer for advice. Fairly problem free but it has been rainy this...

When do the nets go up?

Learned peoples Watching my first crop of Marquette growing daily. Wondering, do I wait for the colour turn to put the nets up? We have a LOT of birds and I am sure I would get cleaned out quickly. Any downside of being early? We also might have some racoons that need relocation. Hoping...

    Pruned Marquette vines

I certainly agree that Marquette shoots reach for the sky! I am going to stick with TWC, I think.. Maybe the weight of the clusters will help them hang down. I've watched mechanical shoot positioning and it looks brutal! My 10 3 year old vines have maybe 1/2 inch or 1cm ish cordons. Some...

How much wine do you make? (2022)

All Marquette. I am between Ottawa and Montreal so it needs to be winter friendly.

How much wine do you make? (2022)

I guess I am still on the initial slope, albeit with vines. Planted 10 the first year, additional 25 the next and I'm thinking I need an additional 25 this year. 1st crop this year and I am SOOOO excited. I "think" a full sized barrel (225L) is a good annual target. We'll see.

    Evaluating first wine from grapes

I bulk aged for a year then bottled about a month ago. Yeah, I'll need to hide the rest of those bottles for another year, but I'll know where I hid them. I need to bottle some kit wine, like now. Abstinence has never been my strength. And, I see a barrel in my future. Thanks all

    Evaluating first wine from grapes

Learned gentlemen and ladies My first try at wine from grapes just had its 1 year birthday. So I got out the cork screw. I got about 27 liters from 3 cases of Cab. with a very light press. Grapes looked to be in great shape. I had 2 oak spirals in the carboy for 30 days early in the...

    Empty bottle storage

I am probably over thinking this, but wondering if I am missing an elegant solution. I am in a rural environment which means a humid dirt floor basement plus mice. Talking about 3-400 bottles at any given moment. First try was milk cartons with bottles upside down. Not bad but bottles became...

    First time from grapes

So exactly 1 year after launching my first cab from grapes I am pleased with the results....no....thrilled with the results! Just bottled my free run and am into bottle number 1. I oaked with a spiral and bulk aged in a 15C basement. If anything I would like more oak but I am a convert to...

    What happens after frost damage?

So, the sage advice from this forum proved correct. All but 3 of 25 new vines recovered. The best of that batch reached the top wire already! (almost) (TWC). The 2nd year vines did not refruit, but grew with vigor along the top wires. So next year....grapes!

    What happens after frost damage?

12 days later, my 1 year old vines are all recovering nicely. But 20 out of my 25 new vines, planted a week before the frost, look like they did not make it. They had just started budding when frost hit. All Marquette.

    What happens after frost damage?

Thanks I'll dry my tears and wait and watch.

    What happens after frost damage?

So it looks like a light frost hit my vines. Leave are drooping. Do I prune back or wait for these leaves to drop? I am guessing the vines will re-bud? Thanks Rob

    Good Morning 2021 Growing Season

My marquettes were ahead of sched this year, but last night, May 27/28...frost! Very light but small droplets of ice on the leaves. I think it only just touched 0C/32F. Wait and see I guess. Also had 25 new vines just beginning to bud. Garden is probably toast. Between Montreal and Ottawa.

    What's for Dinner?

My first attempt at smoked brisket albeit with a Weber Genesis and a smoke box. Minimum temp was almost 250F. S&P rub. Wrapped at 165F. But it got away from me and ended up at 215! Tasty but dry. Will try again!
