Taste is subjective to be sure. Many months later it is still not for me. It may be the first wine that goes down the drain. I don't think I made any errors in the process and followed directions, mostly.
I even WAY prefer the Argentia Costco kits.
Transitioning to grapes anyway, just that...
Up here between Ottawa and Montreal my 10 Marquette vines are just beginning to bud. I think May 15 is a "safe" frost date here. The forecast looks OK.
Just ordered another 25 vines so I guess I am hooked. Gotta get the trellis happening!
As a follow up, three months after launching a second wine with Cab skins from 3 cases plus 2 Argentia cab kit concentrate, I have a quite drinkable wine! I had been concerned that it was too thin but it is quite tasty. And you cannot beat the economics. Will repeat next year on a larger scale.
I only just started with them. But, once they are opened, the cap separates from the collar. Resealable, I suppose so, but I don't think I would. I have read here that some re-use the commercial screw tops, but again I would choose not to.
Gotta remove the metal. No loss of blood yet, but it is risky. I use an inexpensive paring knife and a pair of pliers. Should probably wear gloves.
The Novatwist are just as challenging to remove after using but, being plastic, less likely to lead to stitches. (the cap unscrews but the...
I got a quote from waterloocontainer.com in the US. This was for a box of 1000. In Canada Scottlabs has them, also a box of 1000.
I bought 60 from Clickabrew in maritime Canada. Will order 1000 shortly.
I was disposing of a lot of twist cap bottles from the commercial wines we were consuming, and buying cork top bottles. Had a rethink and found Novatwist as a possible solution. I bought 60 caps to try them and was VERY happy with the results. They are easy and quick to install and look very...
I was trying to identify the very different odour from the primary as my Diablo Rojo fermented aggressively...gummy worms...that's it!!! Glad to hear that it WILL get better with a few months behind it. Think I will exclude the sweetener.
Well, no sulfur, no vinegar. Just not "grapey". Kinda like candy. Like it has nothing to do with real grapes at all. This AM the rising alcohol is changing things a bit. I have read reviews of this wine describing it as "different". Smells REALLY different. But time will tell. Just...
Trying my best to let some good stuff age, so I launched a Diablo Rojo kit. Day 5 and it is fermenting gangbusters, but what a different smell! Would anyone care to compare the finished flavour to a commercial wine? Or grape? Not sure that I am looking forward to it. Making it mostly per...
Question for the large volume guys..
I see pricing for large quantities of grapes in tonnes. Are they sold in 1 tonne containers? Or by the 1/2 tonne? I've seen large square plastic containers but they look more like 1/2 tonne. I'm guessing that you show up at the vineyard with a fork lift...
So I planted some Marquette having never tasted a Marquette wine. Thought it might be prudent to taste some before tripling the size of my vineyard. Turns out there's a small vineyard 10 kms from me and they sell a 2017 Marquette. And WOW!! not what I expected. Bold and full bodied. I love...
I did start with a crate with bigger holes but found lots of whole berries going into the must and switched crates. 2.5 cm holes might still be too large as wine grapes are smaller than table grapes.
Youtube's Homewinemaking channel details the process.
I reached for gloves after the first...
I think my flawed logic was each kit contains 7 liters of concentrate to make 23, so wants 16L of water x 2 = 32 liters + I had read to replace 50% of the volume removed at press time so 28 x .5 = 14. 14 +32 = 46 liters so I added 38 to be on the low side. Should have tasted as I added. May...
So, having planted some Marquette, thought I'd better get my feet wet (not literally) with fresh grapes in preparation for mega harvests in a few years. (maybe)
Started small with 3 cases of Cabernet. Grapes looked to be excellent with very few leaves or raisins. Crushed with an upside down...
