    Trellis advice for small vineyard

I have 8 foot cedar round poles in the ground 2 feet, canted out away from the row, with a mix of small rocks and dirt tamped firm all around. This has held up for 15 years just fine. A few that I had put up early on were NOT leaning/canted out and they did 'pull in ' and needed to be re-set. I...

    Ok to spray during flowering?

My opinion is...no spray on the flowers at all, if you can keep from it. BUT I would not be adverse to spraying the main trunks of the vines and the ground beneath the vines. ( sulphur ) Anything you can do without spraying the grape flowers would be a good thing. After they are pollinated and...

    First Time Cherry Wine

I was always under the impression that YES....cherry pits have cyanide in them. But you're okay if you do not break them open or crush them. This always seemed to prove true for me. As a kid, I've swallowed countless cherry pits while eating cherries. As an adult, I've made cherry 'cello' by...

roses for early detection of mildew

I have heard that theory about roses in the vineyard, too. While it looks nice AND I do like roses, I don't think it is going to warn you in advance of mildew. I learned early on that vinifera WILL have a powdery mildew problem if i do not spray sulphur every 7-14 days. Western Washington state...

    Realistic Spacing Question

I have a small backyard vineyard of 50 vinifera (riesling/sangiovese/nebbiolo) . The climate here in SW Washington is ideal for powdery mildew, so air circulation between/through vines is something to think about. If the vines are 'crowded' then you will not have much airflow through the...

    What's in your glass tonight?

DiSaronno fizz...a shot or two of Disaronno and a half-shot of fresh squeezed lemon juice....shaken with ice, top off glass with ice water. They say to use soda water/carbonated water, but I prefer the no-soda-pop fizz. So, i guess I like a Disaronno Flat.

    Punching down in commercial quantities?

I've seen wineries in Washington that manually punch down caps when the wine is in 'dumpster-size' bins, and I've seen them doing 'pump-overs', too, where the must is pumped up from the bottom of the bin and flows up to the top of the cap. But one way or the other the cap is kept wet and the...

    What's in your glass tonight?

Sipping through some Cascade Cliff's wine that was VERY nice. Maybe I should try to let them all age 9 years! Smooth, good mouth-feel, balanced and not acidic. Amazing, considering it was NOT stored well at all. It surprised us.
