    What R you doing today?

Today is harvest day for my Sangiovese and my Nebbiolo. I am anticipating the sangiovese to yield around 7 gallons with a Brix average of only 22... 23 if I'm lucky. The nebbiolo yield will be less due to smaller clusters and not as prolific as the sangio. Brix , however, is just about there...

    Tips on equipment and trellis

My rows have the fruiting wire ( lowest heavy wire ) set at approximately 1 meter high, along with a tandem 'hedge' wire ( lighter gauge wire ) to contain the vines growth about 0.5 meters above the fruiting wire. I use one more heavy wire about 1.8 meters high ( height from the ground ) This...

Have you ever looked at the forecast and want to cry?

I'm near Vancouver USA and have a small backyard vineyard of 10 riesling, 10 sangiovese, and 25 nebbiolo....small but adequate! the vines are 11 years old, and they produce pretty well, except the nebbiolo seems to be sparse. You take what you get! This time of year is always interesting ...

    Whole Cluster White Grapes

When I make my riesling, I crush/destem and then press lightly immediately after, and then add the yeast ( RHST yeast from Morewine ) I use a bladder press and generally try to only press to 1 - 1.5 bar pressure. ( light press )

    Wine Making is Called "Vinting"

Vinters are found in the northern regions and are generally quite cold. They are commonly followed by wet Springs. ( sorry...need more coffee! )

What in the wild wild world of vineyards is going on here?

I get a few vines doing the same thing, trying to grow an occasional new cluster up high. I attribute it to going through our recent dry spell and then cooling off with plenty of rain. I believe that made the vines think it's time to grow again. I only have a few vines that are doing...

    Grape ripening time running out?

I am in Western Washington, too. Small vineyard of Riesling, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. The Riseling is starting to turn, as are the Sangiovese. The Nebbiolo hasn't started turning yet, but my previous harvest for the past 10 years have usually come in around the second week of October, so there is...

    Winter 22 to harvest 23

It is interesting to hear that your early experiences in wine grape growing was quite similar to mine. I didn't spray for powdery mildew at all the first few years, and the fourth year I lost the majority of my crop to it. The berries only grew to the size of peas and then were basically...

    Crusher question

I have a Grifo crusher/destemmer , and I've left the roller gap unadjusted. It seemed to be gapped just right for the grapes I crush. ( sangiovese , nebbiolo , and riesling. )

    maximum extraction when pressing whites

I have been using a Lancman bladder press to press my Riesling grapes. I run them through my crusher/destemmer first, then from there I go directly to pressing. I usually do what I think of as a light press, around 1.5 bar pressure. I let it come up to pressure slowly, then once it gets to 1.5...

    Spraying

I would not spray during flowering. I am waiting on my grapes right now, to get through with the flowering stage so I can spray sulfur.

    Need Some Trellis Advice

My 2 cents* I would think about putting a few posts every 15 feet or so to take some of the weight off the end posts. They don't have to be big posts, but just something to help out with the weight on the fruiting wire ( lower ) . I use steel t-posts, which work great for this. Tensioners...

    What's in your glass tonight?

And it is rather nice ! 65% Barbera , 25% Sangiovese , 10% Nebbiolo. 90 degree weather caused two of these bottles to disappear!

End posts popping out of the ground

I use 6 inch posts on the ends of my rows , and I put them in the ground about 2 feet, leaning them away from the row a bit. My rows are short, only 30 feet long, and that seems to hold up to moderate wire tension. I pound steel t-posts in the ground about 10 feet apart to help support the...

Is it too late for lime-sulphur?

As long as your temperatrures there are not going to be over 85 F , I'd say definitely spray your sulphur,

    Thank God for Everclear

I use the 190 Everclear to make limoncello, used it to make cherry-cello...which is super easy. Just toss in the cherries whole! I have made orange-cello....not too bad but i prefer the lemon. This year I will be tossing some apples in it just to see how it goes. And YES, I usually 'cut'...
