    Planting this spring.

I don't think it's been said in this thread, that it's probably a good idea to visit nearby vineyards to investigate which varieties are being grown successfully in your area. Also you can investigate which trellis system is being used. For example, with a downward trailing variety it would not...

    Planting this spring.

I would say, regarding the Ph, that you shouldn't worry about it. Since the root zone for grapes can be quite deep you would need to alter tons of soil to an unknown depth.

    If you did it again?

For a red take a look at Verona.

2018 Growing Season. How was yours?

    I forgot to mention raccoons.

    Soil test analysis questions.

I'm starting to think that the soil tests for grapes aren't very helpful, because we don't know how deep the roots are or to where they have wandered. I'm going to try petiole testing next year.

2018 Growing Season. How was yours?

Pretty much exactly the same here in Northern Illinois.

Red Wine Flavor from Country Fruits

Shane I can't tell you what the mature Syzygium Cumini is similar to because I wasn't able to age it. You will find it is high in tannins, and if you get the Ph right you will find that it is well worth making. My guess is that of the tropical fruits that it (Syzygium Cumini )and the jaboticaba...

Red Wine Flavor from Country Fruits

Shane Regarding the Syzygium Cumini. You won't find it in the markets. It fruits twice a year. The trees are large with lots of foliage. When they are fruiting the trees are loaded with fruit. Pick them when they are ripe. Mix them 50-50 with water by volume. The specific gravity will be low...

Red Wine Flavor from Country Fruits

Do you have access to Syzygium cumini? It has many different common names. In Goa and the Philippines, jambolans are an important source of wine, somewhat like Port. If you do I can tell you how to make wine from them.

Growing Petite Pearl and Verona Growing

I have both PP and Verona. Next year will be the first year that anyone harvests Verona. Depending on the month I don't get more than ten hours of sun. For the most part grape growers East of the Mississippi had a horrible climactic year. Way to much rain. I harvested some PP last year that was...

    Soil test analysis questions.

For turf it was suggested that I apply Sulphate of potash at two pounds per 1000 sq ft every month. Il probably hit the grapes too

First year vines, fall maintenance help

I would say that most of the articles written about not harvesting the second year are related to Vinifera varieties. Note that in California and on the West coast they have poor foothill soils and always are irrigating and talking about irrigating. My opinion is that the Northern Hybrids are...

    Soil test analysis questions.

Dennis Griffith I am going to study what you have posted. Big H Have you noticed leaf discoloration in the fall on your vines? How has high K and Mg affected either vines or fruit? Did your report make suggestions for remediation?

How much pears for 5 gallon batch

You will want to use pure unadulterated pear juice. One wouldn't cut apple cider with water to ferment it, and pears are much weaker of a fruit than cider apples. I would guess that you'll need twice as much fruit. If they are common eating apples you will want to ferment them in a bag, and then...

What are you making and what have you made ???

I've got three gallons of plum from last year, ready to bottle. Five gallons of elderberry mead, from a month ago. Its mead because I used honey instead of sugar. And three gallons of this years homegrown Petite Pearl. I racked this a little while ago and am on my second glass. Very rewarding. I...
