Last year I bagged my grapes, which worked really good for birds. It was a pain to put them on, but it will go better this year. I had zero problems with birds, and the grapes were in great condition. The problem I had was raccoons, particularly the last two weeks til harvest. They climbed up...
Studies have shown that surface wood chips do not affect root zone nitrogen. https://permies.com/t/58634/urban-myth-woodchips-nitrogen,https://agrilife.org/etg/fresh-wood-chips-for-mulch-harmful-or-good/, https://www.gardenmyths.com/mulch-how-does-it-affect-soil/
I would probably prune off the trunk on the right. I would leave the strongest bud on the other two and remove the others. Then as the vines grow up, tie them to the support with surveyors tape, or green gardening tape. Others may have different suggestions. I would mulch the vines with wood...
There is surely some food for thought in the article. It would be nice to see some grape researchers do some experimentation. I wonder which species of birds are causing the problems in the Midwest?
Mancozeb has been on the market for 50 years. If burning is a potential problem, it shouldn't be too hard to reference it. I think for commercial growers it is more an issue of economics. 'What would be the lowest application rate under normal growing conditions", type of question. Two blue sky...
I've been using 1 1/2 tablespoons per gallon. I think that could be doubled. One of those theses said the rain removes 38% of the Mancozeb. Doubling the dose would give significantly more protection with all this rain. It would leave you with 80% protection.
If I can read between the lines: It looks like even small amounts of rain wash enough off to bring it down to questionable protective levels. Like 1/5 of an inch. Succeeding rains don't seem to wash much more off, up to 1 3/4 inch. If you increase the amount per gallon you'll have more on the...
Cabras, P., Angioni, A., Garau, V.L., Melis, M., Pirisi, F.M., Cabitza, F., and Pala, M. 2001. The effect of simulated rain on folpet and mancozeb residues on grapes and on vine leaves. Journal of Environmental Science and Health 5...
I Mancozeb rainfastness and residue thresholds for control of Venturia inaequalis...Our results on the persistence of mancozeb to rain rather agrees with that of Carbas et al. (2001) on vineyard leaves. Carbas et al. (2001) found that mancozeb residue loss was only 20% after 45 mm of torrential...
I sprayed mancozeb yesterday. We just got an inch of rain. Tomorrow no rain, then rain forecast everyday for the next seven days. I suspect many others are experiencing lots of rain too. What should be done spray wise with this much rain?
I don't see anything too severe in your pictures. I would say don't spray for Japanese beetles until they show up. Most of us use Mancozeb or Dithane until 65 days prior to harvest. I use Mancozeb and micronized sulfur together with a sticker, but some varieties of grapes are sensitive to...
I think it's doubtful it has anything to do with the mulch. I mulch my vines exactly like you and have never had a problem. To me it looks like airborne herbicide damage. Like someone said maybe from three miles away. Grapes are highly sensitive in ppm. All US agricultural material is...
