    New vines

I would gently straighten the trunk out on #1 and strap it to the stake, and get it up to the wire. It may be too late and the trunk will just have a wiggle in it, it isn't a big deal. You can also rub off those buds on the wobbly part of the trunk on #1. I would also tie up #2 and #3 about two...

    New vines

On mine, I rub off anything below the graft union but for year 1 I stake what I want to be the main trunk, and rub off all other buds. I let anything that grows off the main trunk grow that first year. Depending on how high the main trunk gets (some will be 6ft, some will be 2ft, by end of...

    Are my grape plants dead?

I had plants that were grafted and callused in februrary, that didn't bud out and start growing until yesterday. I had given them up for dead and basically ignored them from march till now-they're fine, just slow. Some will always do that. I had many vines that were destroyed by a family...

    New house with Grape vine!

Look on YouTube for "Four-arm Kniffen Pruning" and you will find exactly what you need. There are several very instructive videos by university extension services on pruning Concord and similar vines this way.

    What is happening here?

Powdery mildew or black rot. Mancozeb/manzate or Captan, are my go-tos.

    Anyone grow table grapes?

Reliance is a red seedless variety, not a white. It's also an indicator cultivar for Pierce's disease, so if you have Pierce's disease vectors in your area...you will know it. Check out the fruit growers forum at Permies, and the growing fruit.org message boards. There are also several Google...

    This year's practice at propagation

Not to my knowledge. Green cuttings must have at least 1 leaf, and pretty well need to be done under mist, the way you are doing it. The method here is a close approximation of how US nurseries do the job, but even the French use slightly different ways to induce callusing.

    This year's practice at propagation

So far, only two grafts have for sure taken. Of those, one of them might or might not have roots, and the other definitely has some roots-so we'll see how things keep going forward. There's still a long way to go yet, before I can call any of them a success.

    This year's practice at propagation

No worries. Its almost warm enough to move the callusing box out to the garage, and get the lights on them.

    This year's practice at propagation

Callusing occurs between 78 and 88F, below 76 callusing does not occur hardly at all, and above 88 the callus tissue is so soft it will break off and not form a proper union. Here's a chip bud graft, Andre grafted onto 101-14MGT, that has just swelled enough to split the wax case: Here's...

    This year's practice at propagation

The ROOTS never see wax! Only the shoots! Any white shoot growing from a bud that will eventually become a cane is dipped. When coming out of callusing there are usually no roots...that's why those white shoots will die, no way to intake water. Just regular parrafin wax. Melted and held at...

    This year's practice at propagation

Started back mid-january, so this is a catch-up post. Started back last year, and have been patiently waiting to work on practicing my grafting and rootstock preparation. Had some luck, actually! Cuttings are kept in damp paper in the fridge all winter, pulled out, and stood up in glasses of...

    New vineyard

That's normal for cuttings. They are ideally 1 year old wood, so some of those buds are always going to be flower clusters. 101-14 isn't sterile, it's female. It requires a pollinator. But, any fruit set on a 101-14 will absolutely be a crossing of it and whatever parent pollinated it. All...

How do I use this trellis for Cab & Merlot?

I would use that trellis in that configuration as a Lyre style, basically just use the principles behind VSP with a divided canopy. You could also use it as the Wye style, by letting the shoots grow up and arc over the top wire to the outside, which is what it appears has been done. Think...

    New vineyard

Different methods for different needs. If you are grafting vines, you need to make sure the graft union is at the proper temperature to callus and be sure it doesn't dry out. If just rooting cuttings, anyethods work.

    New vineyard

I do, but you wouldn't have to, strictly speaking. After the graft is mostly healed I pull the staple by cutting it flush on one side, then pulling the shanks straight through.

    New vineyard

So I realized I left out some details. The grafts I did that are callusing now are Vidal Blanc onto 3309c, and are 1/8" to 3/16" diameter, smaller than will work in most omega tools. A single slash whip graft, no tongue, with a normal swing line stapler staple through the matched up graft...

    New vineyard

As long as your melting point is below 140, it'll probably work. You want full liquidus at 140 or below, and cold water ready to cool the wax as soon as you dip it. Usually though I use Parafilm M grafting tape, which requires no wax in many cases, unless I sit down to do a lot of grafts. I...

    New vineyard

I use the same mats. For mine, I took two bath towels and layered over the top to help keep the temperature from fluctuating. Of course, mine are also whip grafted and then callused, so I am healing the graft at the same time.

    New vineyard

They won't callus below about 78F soil temp. No roots until callus, but once you have that callus tissue, the roots will start growing as low as 40F. I just went through the same on my test samples. Upped the temp 2F on each mat, nothing under 78F callused, but a t 82F it was like magic. 10...
