    Head training hybrids

I have some Cayuga (32 vines)planted on a stony low vigor site going into year two. Each vine is currently staked with a heavy metal t-post. I was thinking of experimenting with head training them rather than lay posts and wire. I have not found much online as to how a hybrid grape like Cayuga...

    Wisconsin Grape Varities

Since it sounds like you are interested in Whites I would second Greg's suggestion of La Crescent. A vineyard near me has made some fantastic wines with it and it has stayed in their vineyard even though in zone 6 we have a lot other white varieties that grow well. Also, Andy at NE Vine is a...

    Pruned my vines today... picture!

Looking nice! Still too early in my neck of the woods for me to think about pruning, we had snow today and generally nasty out. Keep us posted on your progress!

    Varieties for central Massachusetts

Be sure the soil is loose enough under the vines as well. I have some vines on stony ground in here in CT and some on sand. On the stony spot I took out the big rocks and loosened the soil below. Roots need space and oxygen. I think your varieties will be fine. Marquette makes nice red for me...

thinking about planting grapes where to start?

I have Cayuga Aromella, Marquette, Frontenac, Frontenac Blanc, and Gruner Veltliner here in Enfield likely just a bit south of you. Aromella is new to my vineyard so no review. The other hybrids are all good performers. The Gruner requires extra care but I enjoy it even though it doesn't always...

SWPA - Vines for ornamental/privacy fence.

Sounds like a fun project. Think about Marquette. They are very vigorous in my vineyard and I think generally too. Makes nice wine and ok jelly and if you allow it lots of excess foliage.

    Soil Test results

You definitely need to lime this piece of land to start off. Raising soil pH will free up nutrients that are tied up in the soil and this may be enough to get you going. You can always add nutrients if they look a bit weak during the season.

    New to growing

Looking good, Brian. I second what grapeman says on not expanding too quick. I have about 60 vines half of which are bearing fruit and it is quite enough to keep them all doing well. Id hold off a few years and let the ones you planted mature to be sure you don' t bite off more than you can handle.

    Abnormally Dry

Here in CT we are 6 inches behind on rain with not much in sight. The drought makes the roots go deeper which is good, but a nice rain would be better!

    Late breaker

I've attached a few pictures from this year's planting. I have 28 Cayuga in this planting. 27 vines got growing right away and are doing well for the first year (2nd photo). The little guy in the first photo though has buds that are just starting to open. I set them all the last week of April...

    Spray regimen question?

You want enough room between rows to work comfortably, be that mowing, spraying, harvesting, pruning, etc. You also want to get enough light and air flow to come in. If you cram in too many vines to the point where you lose airflow and light the problems those conditions cause will eliminate any...

    Spray regimen question?

You shouldn't be having to spray for much with new vines. The first season main goal is to retain enough of leaves to make energy for the roots - so some insect control or fungicide as needed. I don't know much about the variety you are growing but I think what is meant by resistance is that the...

    Pyganic for Beetle control

In my part of the country it is a bit early to be thinking about beetle control, but I was wondering if anybody out there has used pyganic for beetle control in their vineyard. If you have how has is worked out for you? I was thinking of trying it out on some of my vines this season when the...

    Weed control in the vineyard

Trimex contains 2-4D so that one is a bad choice for the vineyard. Stick with roundup or generic glyphosate.

    Weed control in the vineyard

If you are going to spray roundup you can make the cone salcoco is talking about from the top of a 2 or 3 liter soda bottle sliding the sprayer wand through a rubber stopper put in the mouth of the bottle. Remember roundup will only kill what it touches so a still time of day, early morning if...

    White grape vine selection

Listen to Grapeman SteveH. Cayuga can make you a wide variety of white wine, depending on how you handle it from sweet to dry. I have probably around 30 vines and it is by far my favorite white grape.

    Trellis Posts

I am a fan of metal posts in-line and only using treated wood posts on row ends. Metal posts save a lot of digging if you work by hand like me and take as long to rust out as treated posts do to rot.
