    Bird netting recommendation

I purchased this netting a few years ago. It has a smaller mesh size. I really like it, but I wish it came in wider rolls to accommodate my GDC trellis. In hindsight, I would compromise on the mesh size, and just get something 19-20 feet wide to throw over my GDC trellis...

    Japanese beetles help

Frontenac is a bit of a tease. Its sugar levels come up quick, but the acids take forever to drop off. At least that is how mine behaves. H

    marquette nutrient defiency or fungus

I vote Iron Chlorosis or Nitrogen deficiency. Potassium deficiency would present as orange/brown discoloring of leaves. Since you had bull canes, Nitrogen deficiency seems a little less likely. Iron problems usually appear in young leaves first. What was the pH from your soil test? Has it been...

    Japanese beetles help

Do you have a reference for this beneficial predation? Everything I have read indicates that JB are herbivores. Any chance you are thinking of some other bug? From https://entomologytoday.org/2019/04/29/new-guide-integrated-pest-management-tips-japanese-beetles-soy-corn/ H

    Japanese beetles help

When I first got into this, I would read stories about people trying to rejuvenate neglected vines. I would think "why would anyone let their vines go like that in the first place?" Well, now I know why! H

How important is late afternoon, mid-late season sun?

How many GDD does your site get per year? What is the percent grade of your slope? At 48 degrees N, a North facing slope at 10% grade gets about 10% less sun energy than flat ground in June, and 20% less in September. A single wrong variable doesn't make a site a bad location for grapes, but...

    Japanese beetles help

Both our chickens and ducks eat them. l believe the powder still uses carbaryl as the active ingredient. It is effective against JB as well, but it is important to understand that you are essentially using a different product. H

    Japanese beetles help

I use liquid sevin concentrate (zeta-cymerperethin). It is effective and degrades quickly. Going to give milky spore a try this fall. Don't know much about it. Some people even use cordless dust busters. Tonight I was pondering whether I could grow some wild grape in our chicken pen to attract...

Which direction is the grown sloping to on this site? aka the aspect of the site.

How important is late afternoon, mid-late season sun?

In terms of photosynthesis, you won't lose much. The late day sun is not nearly as powerful as the mid day sun pounding down directly on the leaves. However, there are some cons Dew forms earlier on vines shaded in the evening, which means they will be wet longer overnight They will spend more...

First year vines, fall maintenance help

Double A does not currently list grafted foch or marquette, so hopefully he is ok. update: I was wrong, they do list grafted foch : https://doubleavineyards.com/marechal-foch-grafted H

    Marquette veraision

I am a big believer in backing up the net with scare device. I use scare tape instead of fake owls, but the idea is the same: scare them off before they have time to ponder how to get inside the net. Last year, only ***** and possum got inside the nets to cause any real harm. I might add some...

First year vines, fall maintenance help

Didn't you say all your vines were grafted? If so, then wouldn't that imply that shoots emanating from the ground are rootstock suckers and not shoots from the variety you planted? H

    Japanese beetle devastation

Those pythrethrins, which are quite similar in molecular structure to synthetic zeta-cypermethrin, are also highly toxic to cats. You are essentially using nature's Sevin, and should take nearly identical precautions with respect to bee activity, cats, fish and PPE. H

    Pest identification

Are those aphids? In orchards, it is not recommended to use sevin for aphids. It kills too many aphid predators. Not sure if that is a concern for grapes. Admire Pro provides excellent control of aphids in apples. It is used on grapes for control of phylloxera, leafhoppers, and asian lady...

    Japanese beetle devastation

The JB population exploded here this week. We have had them for about 3 or 4 weeks now, but they went nuts this week. IMO, the vines that you have are going to have a better shot at survival than anything you plant this late in the season. We have enough season left for your vines to grow some...

    Quick question about grape gender

Many (if not most) grape varieties have "perfect flowers", which have both male and female parts. Any vine with fruit is either a hermaphrodite or a female. St Pepin is one common example of a female variety. H

    Netting to keep birds away

Some people can get by without nets for early harvest white grapes. Edelweiss and Brianna are two examples of white grapes that are harvested around 15-18 brix. Some of the vineyards near me don't bother netting them. Red wine grapes and later harvest white grapes need protection. You will...

    Bugs on Grapes

New Sevin (Zeta-cypermethrin) has a 1 day PHI if you want to go the chemical route. Makes some people nervous. If you decide to use water, do so judiciously. You don't want to absorb a bunch of water into your berries. H

    Marquette Grape?

To answer your question, summer pruning does not inherently harm the vine. Shoot thinning, hedging, skirting, lateral removal, and leaf pulling are all common forms of summer pruning. It won't kill or harm the vine, but it does invigorate the vine to grow more. That said ... I would personally...
