    Motorizing a manual destemmer/crusher

Well, I’ve put it off until the last minute as usual. I have the motor, the motor plate mounting bracket concept is on paper, researched the motor drive pulley (3/4” bore, 2-3” OD) but am having a heck of a time finding a v pulley with 18mm bore. Looking at a 8-12” driven pulley but for the life...

    Marquette starting veraison......

I think we are just going to have to accept they will be early this year. I though disease would set in but they’re holding. I’m in west central Wisconsin.

    Marquette starting veraison......

All my 11 year old Marquettes have turned red. I’m going to have to get serious here and start with brix testing and try the new hand held pH meter this weekend. My 4 year old Marquettes are just starting to turn and are fairly on schedule even though these took a frost beating this spring.

    making wine from Marquette grapes

I try to get above 25 brix and just started checking pH with a meter last year so I’ll have to check notes. Just worried black rot will take it out. My sabs are still quite green.

    making wine from Marquette grapes

Yes. Nothing good can come of this. I’ve only harvested once in Aug and it was the last week in Aug and I have 10 seasons of harvests. we’ll see how this plays out.

    Fast ferment conical

For primary fermentation, I’ll leave the ball closed and the day before I think it’s done, I’ll open it up. That is enough time for settling. Now, are you doing all grape or extract batches? My red grape primary fermentation is done in 1/2 barrels and white grapes are either done in a ss 20...

    Fast ferment conical

Actually it’s all I use now. The catch bulb just came apart yesterday so I will have to get a new one. Threads got a 1/2” tear.

    More frost damage

Lost the first buds of about 75 Marquette on Saturday. Last night was not too bad.

    All in One wine pump

Likewise. Tennessee is a great state, but I’m not telling you anything new. Lynchburg, Chattanooga and now Knoxville, we’re having a blast.

    starting cuttings

Well, here are the cuttings. Ran out of potting soil so there will be about 25 more at the end of the day. Nothing but sticks at the moment. To answer Rice guy, I really didn’t look at bud size when I made the cuttings. Just tried to get at least 3 buds per cutting. Oh ya, ran out of heat mat too.

    starting cuttings

I have about 75 cuttings. About 50 on a heat mat and the rest in front of the slider. I just stick them in the powered root hormone, put them in a styrofoam cup 3/4 filled with potting soil with the bottom punched with a pencil. I’ve done this before with very good success. Just waiting for some...

    Last Frost and Pruning

I have ~200 Marquette. It’s hit or miss with these guys. I have 15 gallons of 2019 Marquette that I’m cycling through a 5 gal oak barrel. It is very good.

    Last Frost and Pruning

Last frost date was generally Mother’s Day but I’ve seen the frost go into the 3rd week of May. Marquettes, Sabrevois, Brianna, Louise Swensons and Prairie Star. Yes, spur pruning. I try to get 13 Spurs per arm and get 2 canes per spur.

    Last Frost and Pruning

I live in west central Wisconsin and haven’t started pruning. I’ll get 3 acres done in one day. The first pruning is done between the first and second wire in a VSP. I’ll wait until the threat of frost is gone and go back and prune down to 2-3 buds. This takes a couple weeks. The theory is to do...

Help needed with choosing a variety: Prairie Star vs. E.S. 10-18-14

I’ve had Prairie Star for 11 years. You have your good years and not so good years. Fruit set is a problem. If the spring is not prefect, you will have problems with your clusters in the fall. The wine is very good. I liken it to a Riesling but that’s just me. Don’t know the other grape.
