    Equipment list help.

You'll need a corker, eventually. Bite the bullet and save some money...go ahead and buy a floor corker. The smaller red Portuguese corkers work great. Along with the corker you might want to pick up a bottle sanitizer...basically a bowl with a pump sprayer in it...they work great, too...

    Winemaking containers

Gerry, I'm an over-self-educated newbie... Here's my thoughts. :) When transferring from primary to secondary or racking to a new vessel and the need for adding additives is present first maybe pour a cup of the must into a container and mix your ingredients in this small amount. Next pour...

    Effects of the wines

Years (YEARS) ago I would get a headache when I drank a beer. I quickly found that if I drank TWO beers I didn't have the headache...problem solved. Push through the drowsiness and drink an additional 1-1/2 glasses of wine. :dg:d

    Effects of the wines

I wonder if the wines that you've been drinking are lower ABV% and with the 13% wines you are simply getting hit with higher concentration of alcohol? Many of the low-priced "dollar store" wines are low-ABV% wines. Just a shot in the dark... :)

    A total beginner seeking guidance.

I'm a newb, but below is a link I found (quoted text is the link). The quoted matter might be what you're interested, but if the mold has covered the surface of the wine the article says to dump it(?). If only a small amount of mold is present straining the wine and immediately adding K-meta...

recycled bottle post-cleaning logistics (for temporary storage)

Rinse with hot water. Rinse again. You don't want chlorine residue. I washed my bottles in B-Brite Cleanser with a bottle brush and rinsed really well with cold water...and then stood them on end inside of a couple of clean 5-gallon buckets to drain. Just prior to bottling I used squirted...

    Muslin vs. bed sheet cloth

    Got a link?

Complete Novice with a lot of grapes

The sorbate should have the yeast shutdown so most likely is safe to bottle. K-meta (potassium metabisulfite) gives the wine protection from oxidation and other spoilage. My mead had none and survived those years. But the mead *is* a high ABV% honey wine of around 14%...and it's mead. Grape...

    Muslin vs. bed sheet cloth

Does this mean there are no sheets in California?

    Muslin vs. bed sheet cloth

Wait. Do you mean people *have* actually suffocated themselves with bed sheets? There's no warning about this on the labels! I won't sleep a wink tonight!!!!!!! :ts

Oh well, auto-correct got me on the title...:ft

    Muslin vs. bed sheet cloth

Muslin has a good bit lower thread count than bed sheet cloth has. Apparently the muslin will let more oxygen through than the bed sheet but is it a big enough difference to warrant going out and buying new muslin? I've got old bed sheet material on hand. ??? ETA: This is to be used for...

Primary fermentation done ... what next?

It's really all one fermentation. It slows down. The "rule of thumb" is if there is no change in the hydrometer reading for three days in a row and the SG is 1.0000 or below, preferably below, then the fermentation is done. You don't/can't stop an active fermentation. I suggest you go to Jack...

Hydrometer reading? Around or below the 1.0000 level?

Complete Novice with a lot of grapes

Have you smelled or tasted it? What has it been sealed with? Was there any k-meta or k-sorbate added to it? Been sitting on the lees? I bottled a 3-gal carboy of mead that had sat for 7 years on the lees. It was sealed with an airlock with vodka in it. It turned out pretty good, ABV 14%...

    Sugargate muscadines for wine?

Ok, I just couldn't find much out about the Sugargate muscadines in regards to wine making so I cancelled them and replaced them with Dixie Reds which are known to be excellent for wine making. That will give me one Noble and two Dixie Reds, all self-fertile and all noted for making good wine...

how best to store wine during sedimentation?

Rookie/newbie/inexperienced response here... :h What size jugs are you using? 1, 3, 5, 6 gallons? Total darkness would naturally be the best, but dim lighting works. I take it that you have the jugs sitting in the bathtub which is a nice, safe spot for the primary fermentation when a...
