    Heating pad under primary fermenter

Will do, thanks Scooter. Edit. I went and turned the pad off. It was up to 28 or 29 celcius. I'll check it again in the morning, and turn the belt off too if necessary. It's in my garage and want to maintain some heat. Have the garage furnace set to 19, otherwise it gets too be running all the...

    Heating pad under primary fermenter

I got home from work and checked the progress. The heat pad on a towel with the reflective sun visor around it and the belt seemed to be working. Its sitting at 23c and has a wonderful froth all around it.

    Heating pad under primary fermenter

I haven't put a towel around it, I did put one of those foldout things that go on your car windshield to reflect the heat out hoping it would insulate enough to keep it in . I have a blanket I can wrap around it, and I'll change the towel under it to a single layer.

    Heating pad under primary fermenter

Hi, I started my first wine the other day but am having problems keeping the temperature up. I have a heating pad and a belt. The pad is under a towel below the fermenter. If I can't keep it to temperature that way, is it ok to put the pad directly on the bottom? I'm worried that the batch is...

    Stirring the primary

Hi, I was wondering how do I go about stirring the primary when it has a 35 lb. Mesh bag of apples? Do I pull them out, stir and replace or just swirl the bag? Stir the outside making the bag spin? Thanks, Jay

    Increasing a recipe

Thanks guys. That site looks pretty neat. I'll read it more after work. I froze my apples last night to help with the mashing. I did a 30lb and 15lb bag. This weekend coming just got busy, but I'm hoping to get it all started in the next week or so.

    Increasing a recipe

Good to know about the yeast. Thanks. When I was a kid, my mom would teach me to bake and when increasing the recipe she wouldn't increase the salt, because it just makes it saltier and overpowering. (I don't really understand it either). Unless I was mistaken and it was increased, just not...

    Increasing a recipe

Hi all, I'm following a recipe for crab apple wine and it's for a 1 gallon batch. I'm wanting to do a 5 gallon. I'm assuming I increase everything by 5. So the 6lb of fruit for 1 gallon would be 30lbs for 5 gallons. Is that correct? What about the additives? Pectic enzyme campden tablets etc...

    Hello from Sidney, BC, Canada

Welcome Dwayne, I'm fairly new here as well but this seems like a great community to be a part of. Being from BC, do you have the opportunity to grow your own fruit? Or is that more okanagan area and not the island?

    Hello from Edmonton

Thanks for the welcome folks. I was talking to a friend last night, and little did I know, he makes wine when he has the chance. He's planning on making a couple gallons of honey mead next week. He gave me a good shop to check out. I lucked out on Kijiji last night and came across an add for a...

    Hello from Edmonton

Hello, I just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself. I'm a beginner and am just learning about wine making. Some friends from work were telling me their grandparents used to make crab apple wine. Well, the house we bought in December (my in laws house for 42 years) has a crab apple tree in the...
