    Starting PH?

Update on PH. I took a hydrometer reading it was showing 1.045. Mix mixed in the extra nutrients and took a PH. PH was showing 2.45. I was shocked and worried it might drop a bit more if I add the 3rd bottle of lemon juice. I thought my PH meter needed calibration and I calibrated and took...

Why does oxygenating restart fermentation ... at least this time

Not really, but I do keep the riesling fermenting next to the sliding glass door. The floor temp there is consistent at 55. I keep a foam mat on the concrete as a buffer and I take it's temp. That has been measuring at 59-60f. So I'm figuring the temp around my fermentation is 60f, although...

Why does oxygenating restart fermentation ... at least this time

When the hydrometer reading hit 1.040, I still stirring because I was thinking I wanted some yeast to settle by the time I was ready to move it to a carboy. Two days later, I took another reading, and noticed barely any bubbles coming up and the hydrometer was still showing 1.040. The...

Limoncello - how long will it keep?

Thanks.. I was thinking what I was reading was wrong. I did find a few posts stating there was no issues with keeping it at room temp, but those never gave any time frame. I'm going to try and make some.. probably in the 20-30% abv range and just keep it stored on the shelf somewhere... if...

Limoncello - how long will it keep?

I'm thinking about making some Limoncello, but I'm not sure how much to make because I don't know how long it might keep. I keep reading that limoncello only keeps for 1-3 months in the fridge and up to a year, if kept in the freezer. How can that be when most Limoncellos have an ABV of...

    Hello From Maryland

Ok. I just signed up for a 2 year membership to Maryland Grape Growers Association, in the hopes that I might be able to attend their annual meeting, which supposedly has workshops for new growers. Well, I can't find any information on when they have these workshops and the info on their annual...

    Hello From Maryland

I'm an any kind of wine guy, but generally I tend to drink whites. For me, growing grapes is more of a learning thing. The goal is to be able to make wine, from start to finish with grapes I grew. So far, this is what I know. A vine on average produces 10lbs of grapes. I need the vines on...

    Hello From Maryland

I'll definitely give it another go.. I just need more knowledge before trying. That 1st time.. I was thinking if I plant it, it would grow. LOL.. I found out I was WRONG..

    Hello From Maryland

I really don't remember.. at that time, I was doing a lot of vegetable gardening and wanted to try some grapes. I planted 2 vines of each.. can't remember the varieties.. but 3 were wine grapes and one was a concord. I live just above Port and there's plenty of sun and airflow. My issue I...

    Hello From Maryland

I almost never look at this forum!. Glad I did. I'm up here in Ceciltucky too, down in Port. About 10 years ago, I tried to grow grapes and failed.. Met a guy off of Tome Hwy that had started a year before.. Never kept in touch with him, but I think he gave up. Hope you have some success...

    Bottles

This is messed up! I say this because everything else is so expensive in Cali compared to other places. It seems, grapes, juice and wine bottles are cheap. So weird... I wish I could get new bottles for $11 a case!

how to use a hydrometer for newbies

What you heard is incorrect for the most part. During primary fermentation, especially in the beginning, you want oxygen exposure to help the yeast. Once fermentation is ended, or near ended is when you want to keep oxygen exposure to a minimum. That's the easy short answer. BTW, during...

    Starting PH?

@jgmillr1 You've given me an idea.. I'm not sure how well it will work but here's the plan. Let me know what you think. The plan for the next batch is to use all 96oz of lemon juice added to 5 gallons of sugar water... which would include the nutrients and what not. Use calcium carbonate to...

Purchasing Spring Grapes - Denver, CO

I don't get it..especially for whites. Why are juice prices so much lower than grapes? You can't get 6 gallons of juice from a couple lugs of grapes.

    Starting PH?

I was thinking about trying it in that PH range, but then I was thinking it might not be lemony enough. I was also thinking about trying to get my hand on some thompson grape juice.. using it and just a 32oz bottle of lemon juice. BTW, when you say deacidify, are you saying you're using the...

Purchasing Spring Grapes - Denver, CO

You probably already know but in the fall, there's S&S Winegrapes in Jessup, MD. Last year Kegel's Produce in Lancaster did wine grapes and juice in the spring. I'm hearing they'll be doing it again. I wish Harford Winery would start up again.. but I have a feeling they never will again...
