    RJ Spagnols mystery silver packets

Interesting. So they include oak chips and oak powder. That's a lot of oak.

    RJ Spagnols mystery silver packets

I just opened my first En Primeur wine kit (Italian Rosso Grande Eccelente). Among the ingredients are 3 unlabeled silver packets that feel like they have some sort of powder in them. Since the directions are generic, I'm not clear what they are to know what steps they apply to. Hopefully...

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

Ah, a propane weed torch. Not sure why I didn't think of that. That could work swimmingly. So your rows are 48" apart, and the vines spaced 7.5' in the rows. But what do you consider a necessary weed-free zone width within the row of vines? My mower is 50'... I know I left a foot or so extra...

    Anyone Growing Marquette Grapes?

When I was contemplating what varieties to plant, one of the places I visited was Shelburne Vineyard. Ethan there had the following to say about Verona: "As for Verona, it isn't my personal preference...susceptible to Phomopsis, large leaves, big berries, thin skinned that may be prone to...

Advice needed - planting in zone 4a/4b Northern Wisconsin?

Very interested in this thread as I just planted marquette & petite pearl, and I'm in the same hardiness zone

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

I do organic gardening and I'm philosophically and ethically opposed to glyphosate/Round-Up. Glufosinate also has issues and is likewise incompatible with how I garden.

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

Well, with the amount of rain we've gotten this month, that might be a good thing. But thanks for the info, that does help explain things. I'm currently toying between laying permeable landscape fabric (a pain after the fact, now that the vines are already in, but still do-able) to smother and...

Training: Year 1, thinking ahead to year 2

Do you mean prune the pencil-sized vines off at the point they become thinner than a pencil? Or leave them be if they're pencil-thick at their thickest point, and completely prune the vines that are thinner than a pencil in their entirety? "Otherwise" dependent on...? I'm sorry, I'm not clear...

Training: Year 1, thinking ahead to year 2

So now that I've resolved the question of grafts (I don't actually have any), I'm free to train whatever is coming up. It's been about a month since planting and I'm getting good growth on all the vines. Grow tubes are on and all vines are staked. Currently still working on the trellis wiring...

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

One thing I haven't wrapped my head around: grass and weeds only put down roots a few inches, while grapevine roots will go many feet deep and probably spread out laterally far more than a few feet. How does 2-3" of grass actually starve the grapevine when it is pulling from a different and far...

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

How much of a diameter around the vine? Specifically, how far into the space in between the rows? I have 2x 168' rows, so I'm trying to figure out a practical way for me to accomplish this.

    Anyone Growing Marquette Grapes?

Well, I planted both this year so I guess I'll see how they compare. :)

    Backyard Vineyard Woes

So just how critical is it to clear all grass in a wide swath down the row of vines? I see some do it, some don't. My vineyard is small enough that using power equipment isn't practical, but big enough that doing it by hand isn't either. I've used stone "mulching" about 1' around the base of...

    Buds/canes growing from graft point

Well, good news! According to them, none of their vines are grafted. They only looked that way. So I'm glad to be wrong in this instance. :)

    Buds/canes growing from graft point

In each photo you can see the top cut end of the root stock (brown). Then in each you see a brown cane coming off at an angle. That's the grafted variety. You'll see in the photos that right where those two meet is where a lot are spawning new growth. Since it's on the seam of the graft, I don't...

    Beginner: trying to choose varieties

Just a courtesy update that I ordered a mix of marquette and petite pearl. They are all in the ground and growing, although I have new questions that I've already posted in a new thread. Still working on the trellis... end posts and anchors are in, so basically just need to string the wire.

    Buds/canes growing from graft point

So I got my vines planted a few weeks ago. Everything is growing, so that's a good sign... however, many of the vines have canes/buds now growing from the graft point as opposed to the buds I preserved above the graft (usually about 3) when I trimmed at the time of planting. So I'm left...

    Yeast selection

Oddly, this list lacks EC-1118 which seems to be one of the most-recommended yeasts. Unless I'm missing something...?
