    WineXpert Mezza Luna Red questions

I've had this kit on the shelf for a while waiting for its turn in the rotation. Planning to start this in a couple weeks when the current two "with skins" kits finish their EM and come out of primary. Planning to ferment this on top of the once used skins (Brunello and GSM - both fermented on...

    removing labels easily

Wow! Carb cleaner . . . I like it. Sprays on and fits perfectly in the garage environment. Looks like I'll be making 2 stops on the way home tonight, 1) local liquor store and 2) AutoZone / NAPA. I guess NAPA might be more appropriate for this particular application.

    removing labels easily

I have not tried the oven method and probably will not since my oven does not vent outdoors. For the tough glue left behind after scraping I generally use Acetone which does a reasonable efficient job of getting off the the gummy stuff. However, I ran out this weekend and substituted Mineral...

RJ Spagnols RJS 2017 RQ1 Cabernet Sauvignon

Be sure to post your tasting comments either here or start a new thread. I have a couple different oak options on hand, but I was leaning toward either the Hungarian Med or the French Med +. I probably should have gone for a longer maceration, but I'm fairly pleased with the taste profile at...

Eclipse Bourbon Barrel Zinfandel Cabernet Wine Kit

I'm glad you folks have ferreted out the special instructions because I just got the good news from LP that my kit has shipped. Looking forward to fermenting this kit as soon as there is room in the carboy rotation. This may precipitate an early bottling session to make space! I guess it's...

What to do with done primary yeast and lees?

I dilute and dump mine over the porch railing. I pick a different area each time so that there's not enough accumulation for the wife to notice the gunk on the border plantings. Nothing a good rain won't hide.

    First kit started tonight!

Ditto JohnD's thoughts. Great start! I'm still hypnotized by bubbles burping through an airlock. Could watch them for hours (possible exaggeration). Next best sound to a cork emerging from a bottleneck. Good luck. Be Patient.

RJ Spagnols RJS 2017 RQ1 Cabernet Sauvignon

I hope you enjoy it. I started the Carmenere just after it arrived in late February (notes say a 2/21 yeast pitch). I let it sit on the skins a while and did the first 3 month racking at 6/9. Tasted it last weekend and I think it has very good flavor. Deep and rich with some spiciness...

RJ Spagnols RJS 2017 RQ1 Cabernet Sauvignon

Got the final blend bottled. Somehow I ended up with 31 bottles . . . not complaining. Really delicious now and likely to improve with time. About 13 months old at this point. I'm very happy with this kit and there's a good chance I will pony up the $$ for RQ kits from RJS in the future...

Eclipse Bourbon Barrel Zinfandel Cabernet Wine Kit

I am hoping that the "with skins" is true. I just ordered the kit from LP. The bourbon barrel Cabs & Zins are very popular with my daughter and son in law. If this one comes out right I may get nominated for father of the year! Of course, that will be in 2019 or 2020, assuming that this one...

    Podcasts

Graperadio has interesting podcasts and the hosts are very likeable, but they don't release new episodes very frequently now. They have a companion website that allows you to scan through old episodes. I also like "I'll Drink to That". The host (Levi) interviews winemakers, sommeliers and...

WineXpert Opinion on Eclipse Stag's Leap Merlot

Gewurztraminer is one of our favorites. I've made the RJS Cru Select twice, have the second batch of RJS Cru Select Riesling-Traminer bulk aging (both 16L kits) and just bottled the WE Eclipse Mosel Gewurztraminer. All 3 are really nice kits. The Cru Select kits drink well early. The Eclipse...

WineXpert WE LE Petit Ruby Cab

It does not come with a skin pack. However, it is a big kit and I liked the flavor of the juice prior to fermenting. Mine is only a few months old so the jury is out on how well it will ultimately turn out. I have fairly high hopes at this point.

Mid Atlantic North East Meet Up

Ha! Just ordered it yesterday. I let Steve know that you are a big proponent. Got a batch of Cab Sauv that I am holding off bottling until the AIO arrives. Looking forward to putting it to use. Thanks Fred.

Mid Atlantic North East Meet Up

Tours available any time, but I think the tastings won't start until at least the spring of 2020. I sure am glad I have lots of kits to carry me over until the harvests begin. Those are always available for tasting! Next summer I'll be shopping for the crusher and press. Right now I am...

    2nd Annual M.A.N.E. Event

If you're looking for a similar type event, but in a different location there's a winefest in the Finger Lakes in mid July each year. It's held at the race track outside Watkins Glen and would be a long drive for many of you, but might be an option. The link to this year's event is posted...

Mid Atlantic North East Meet Up

Thought you folks might like to see my little vineyard. 32 vines in total (lots of varieties), 8 new this year and the rest are in their 2nd year. Just got the trellis up last week. Digging 22 post holes by hand was not enjoyable, but I'm happy with the end result. Next year I should get a...

Mid Atlantic North East Meet Up

What's the charge to have the diamonds mounted on a nice gold band? Paul has me excited to pull the cork on my bottle, but I will show incredible restraint and allow it to age, well maybe a week or two!

Mid Atlantic North East Meet Up

I enjoyed all of the wines, but I'll give a nod to the Brunello as well. Had a really soft, pleasant mouthfeel and yet ended bone dry. What kit is that? Heather's Amarone was awfully deep and bold, as was the South African Cab Sauv of Paul's. Fabulous weekend of wine tasting.
