    Other Tweeking Cheap Kits

Started this same kit 17 Dec. 2017. Went 5.5 gallons and added 2 teaspoons of tannin....that was it on the tweaks. Just sitting in carboy now. Basically done, debating about adding the fining agents and then racking. We pinched a little bit the other day....tasted very nice for a 40 buck kit!

What’s your 5 yr winemaking plan??

Five year plan? To still be making wine! But, I have zero desire to go "from grapes"...just means more gear, more ate up storage place, more crap. I am going to stick with kits and maybe juice buckets if I can find some around San Antonio. I like simple, works for me.

    Canned Pilsner

in spite of not mashing the mini mash correctly, this beer came out great. First time I ever added sugar measured directly to each bottle, but it carbed up great...just about perfect I'd say. Justa fizzy yellow beer, very mellow, but has a back end wallop. Two beers and I was hearing bees...

WineXpert Eclipse Lodi Cab - calling all tweakers!

Someone on here posted about using 375 bottles as testers...I took that advice....really good idea IMO. Now when I pull a cork to check the progress, it is only on a half size bottle. I really like it. 375 are just a perfect size for a couple of good glasses. I've actually bought a few more...

    What is your favorite kit?

I got a day off from coaching and working in my wine room....racking filtering starting a couple more batches. tasted the Fontana Malbec that I added plums, cherries and blackberries to....it was all I could do not chug it down....man, it is turning out nice, In a year or so, it oughta be great...

    WE Island Mist Tweaks

I have the Coconut Yuzu on deck...just to be clear...you did reduce the volume to five gallons? Adjust SG for 12% ABV? used half the Fpac in primary? Thanks.

Do oak chips lose their flavor in the bag over time?

Man that liquid smoke is some kinda powerful and all I have ever seen is Hickory. a Bottle cap full in ten pounds of sausage makes "smoked sausage". I'd be using drops in wine....fact is, I don't think I would try it! We got carried away one year with liquid smoke and made a batch of HICKORY...

    removing labels easily

so far, the easiest way for me is a razor blade scraper...rest the bottle on a folded up towel or non-slip surface. Scrape across the bottle NOT up and down. Soaking just made a mess of soggy labels. I clamp a heat gun into a vice and stand a bottle in front of it....heat softens the glue...

I think George Burns said that about green bananas....funny guy that I hear say a bad word. Class.

    Canned Pilsner

I always use RO, UV sanitized store bought water since my well has very hard water and thus a salt softener. Have never had a problem before....but, it could happen. Expound on why you can't use Kmeta or Camden tablets IN THE WATER....if have let it sit for 24 hours or more. I never have, but...

Free "bad" Wine, best path to potentially remedy?

pennies from heaven....actually copper....think I read somewhere copper helped with the sulfur smell/taste. That's just what popped into my head...I've never done it. I'll remember whee I read that in a day or two...maybe!

    Canned Pilsner

Steeped it is then! Bet it makes beer. I frankly have zero desire to get into the "let's spend all day boiling grains"....just don't have the time. Perhaps when I retire and I need something to fill my days. Honestly, you can't even call this brewing! Warm some stuff up and throw it in the...

    Canned Pilsner

"brewed" a Muntons Pilsner last night. Mini mashed with a pound of Crystal, used half Light DME and half simple syrup for the "kilo" of added sugars. Rehydrated the Muntons yeast and built up a starter over the course of Sunday. Pitched at 9:00 PM.... airlock going like a steam engine this...

    What is your favorite kit?

My big kits are still sitting, tasted a few times but can't call a favorite. Just racked a Fontana Malbec for the third time. this is the fourth time we've made this kit and we tweak the dickens out of them. Makes a very nice wine every time. A wine nearly everybody likes and seems to pair well...

    higher price better?

Short answer is yes, they certainly can be. Someone here suggested using the cheaper kits for everyday drinking wine while your expensive big kits do their aging. I have followed that advice...but I am also coming around to face the fact that I like better wines. Where I was buying 2 cheap kits...
