Cold crash and sterile filter to stop fermentation

Hi all, I have a wine I am making for a relative. I make this most years for them, but it's always a rushed affair because we harvest in late September, and it needs to be ready for Christmas. I have no control over the timeline. I know time is the best option, and stopping fermentation isn't...

Grape Crusher - Motor shaft conversion

This worked fine for crushing my grapes, I don't think it would handle anything much denser than grapes though, I would definitely need a bigger power supply than the 3 amp power supply I have hooked up to it now. The controller and motor themselves are rated for 10 amps, so I think it's just...

2020 Fall Grape Season Coming Up

I think I'm skipping making any wine for 2020. I made a huge amount last year, and I'm already short on space to store it before I've even bottled it all. We also harvested our own Muscat earlier this week, but only got about 120 lb of grapes, last year I got about triple that. So we decided...

Grape Crusher - Motor shaft conversion

I got some parts at 'princess auto', sort of a Canadian harbor freight. Found a sleeve that had 8mm inside diameter, 1/2" outside (probably 12mm, but it fit with some help). Not bad for $8. I did a quick test, it works but a non-ripe apple from my tree stopped it. the power supply is only 2A at...

Grape Crusher - Motor shaft conversion

I've got a couple grape crushers, just the manual hopper with a single spiked roller in the middle. I'd like to electrify one of them because I usually crush alone, and it would be a lot faster to have it running all the time. I've got a 24V, 250W DC motor, and a speed controller. The motor is...

    EC-1118

You can also try going to a local bakery and asking if they will seem you some yeast. I got half a pound of fresh yeast for $5 last weekend

Corona Virus & Day to Day

My family and I were in South America on vacation for March, but we had to rush home yesterday before our connecting airport closed totally. So now in 2 week quarantine at home. I was already working remotely while on vacation and will continue now from home. My work has told everyone to work...

    What's for Dinner?

We are in South America for a few weeks (bad timing to be traveling I know, we left a week ago when there were no travel restrictions). Had some good asado tonight :)

Mycoderma? My first try with grapes and not a kit.

Was there anything else in the original recipe other than grapes? I can't see how you'd get such a high pH from just grapes. SG was super high too. Not sure on the white stuff, maybe the carbonate.

Wine Making Log - OpenOffice Spreadsheet

I don't know about anyone else, but I much prefer using Google Sheets. No app to install, can get at it from anywhere. This link is to a converted copy of Timber's Excel file, in Google. The link will make a copy of your own, you can do with what you wish. You'll need a Google account for this...

    Anyone grow table grapes?

I have a few, don't know most of the variety names as I go the plants for free from a friend who was doing some experimental varieties and these were extras. My muscat wine grapes are pretty good table grapes too though. Have to fight the kids off them every fall.

    What's for Dinner?

Typical in our place anyway :) 15 years ago I wouldn't touch seafood with a 10 foot pole. Now we go out for sushi all the tube. The kids are sushi monsters, including the 1 year old. But it's pricey with 5 of us, so we make it at home sometimes instead. My wife is a German speaking South...

    Post a photo, any photo

Picked these up for $50 each today. Once filled by Woodford, then once filled by local brewery. I don't have enough wine or beer to fill one, will probably make some furniture from them.

    Interested in wine kegging

You'll want to use nitrogen for the keg, as co2 will be absorbed into the wine over time, making it fizzy. I'm going to be doing this in a few months. I built a keezer/kegerator that holds four 5-gallon corny kegs, and then room for a smaller 3 gallon. I'll put the wine in the 3 gallon. I'll...

    What R you doing today?

Roofers are here today putting a new roof on our house and garage. Was hoping the shingles would last until spring but wind storm a few weeks ago ripped a bunch off and you could see plywood. Had an inch of snow on the roof but they swept/shoveled it off and got to work. Our main bathroom didn't...
