"New" old wine press and jackpot!

I bought this antique wine press today at a farm auction. Evidently I paid a fraction of what it's worth. I wanted a restoration project that I could eventually use for my wine making. Turns out it doesn't need restored, just cleaned. THEN on the way home I drove past a vineyard I pass...

    Original Skeeter Pee Recipe

My first two batches of wine are to the "aging" stage, so I am eager to start another batch of wine. I've decided to try to make Skeeter Pee. My only hesitation is the slurry. I don't have any. I want my batch to turn out great. I'm trying to weigh my options. Should I just make slurry...

    Worst of the worst

Thank you. I may replace these with something that looks a little better. I really don't think rabbits would be too much of a problem in this area but I will be sure to keep them protected at least until I know the area a little better.

    Worst of the worst

Some of these look like the main vine has died and shoots are coming up from the very base, possibly rootstock, I don't know. I'm thinking any like that should be removed and replaced. I have room for 21 vines. I want a variety for home use. Wine, table, juice and possibly some raisins. I'm...

    Worst of the worst

We bought a place with a small backyard neglected vineyard. I've spent many hours this winter learning about caring for the vines.. I'm getting ready to prune the vines. I think I would be better off removing some of the completely. Here are the worst ones. First one volunteer trees...

    Wild plum juice wine.

I just topped off the one gallon jugs. I used a white zin. It used to be one of my favorites but over the last 2 years I have started liking a little dryer type wine. Anyway, what I tasted of this wine I would call it "drinkable." Not really a lot of flavor, but I am hoping this develops...

    Wild plum juice wine.

I racked this batch of wine today. Wow! There was a lot of sediment. I went from a 3 gallon carboy that wasn't quite full down to 2 one gallon jugs. I need to top off one of the jugs a bit as well. I have a little in a quart jar, but there is so much sediment I am not sure how I would get...

    PEAR JUICE TO THE RESCUE!

I'm excited! This is my first batch of wine. I almost ruined it when I added the K metabisulfite and then the yeast. I was snowed in and couldn't get to town to buy juice to try to fix the problem but remembered I had some pear juice I had canned this past fall. I added my yeast, some sugar...

Sanitizing Bottles What do you use (Poll)

Star san, Kmeta, One step. What is the difference? Is Kmeta the same chemical compound as One step? I have one step. It says you don't need to rinse. I am assuming that it's safe to do it this way.

Getting Started in Country Fruit Wine Making ?

Wild black raspberries are awesome but hard to come by for me. Have you used the golden raspberries? I don't have enough of those to make wine, but might be able to combine them with another fruit.

    Add Your Backyard Vineyard

VillaVino thanks for the pictures. Its a little hard to see close up, but do you use a spur and cane top wire system? That is what I will be doing. Also do you wait until ALL danger of frost is over? We get some pretty late frosts here, and lots of warm weather before that. I'm sure these...

    Add Your Backyard Vineyard

I will try to get some pictures of the vines before I prune. I was over there today working on the house and checked the vines. The buds do not appear to be starting to swell but I'm sure it will be soon. Pictures of the tangled mess might even be able to help me decide how to proceed with the...

    Add Your Backyard Vineyard

Thank you for the advice. I'm a total novice with grapes but I have spent the last few months watching videos, reading about varieties and oodles of pruning varieties. I will still need to learn about pests and diseases. I'm pretty well stocked up on equipment from living the farm life. I am...
