    Pear wine

Ok. Sounds good. I have tannin and yeast nutrient. I have some acid blend. I'm not familiar with the tannic/long bitter crab apple.

    Pear Wine

I just got in from picking pears. There are a lot of blemishes. I have no idea what kind of pears they are. I picked up a couple that appeared to be ripe but they aren't as sweet as I had hoped. Anyway they are in my basement and as they ripen I will get them cleaned up and freeze them. I'm...

Yes. I always do this when I can (preserve) fruit. I can a lot of peaches, pears and apples.

    Pear wine

I just ordered those bags. I think I'll pick up some white raisins, too. I think I probably have everything else I need.

    Pear Wine

I plan to cut up and freeze, but if I run out of time I might freeze whole. We plan to go pick them in about an hour or so. I will store any that aren't quite ripe in the basement and try to pick and freeze from the bunch as they ripen. Many are pretty ripe right now.

    Pear wine

I'm getting things together for a batch of pear wine. When I raised bees I sometimes used a paint strainer to strain the honey. Would this be a good thing to put the pulp in while it is fermenting?

    Pear Wine

There is a pear tree up the road from me that is absolutely loaded with pears. I asked the lady if I can pick some and she said I could have all I want. I'm going to pick some to can and I want to pick enough to make at least a 3 gallon batch of wine. I can freeze them until I'm ready to...

First crop from the "New Neglected" vineyard

We recently moved and with our new place came a small neglected vineyard. I did my best to prune the wayward vines and I've now harvested two small crops with one vine that has quite a few red grapes left that are not ready to be harvested. I have no idea what varieties are out there! It's...

If it counts if I add other flavors to it then 5,179 + 6 = 5,185

recycled bottle post-cleaning logistics (for temporary storage)

My brushes arrived that I ordered and I just finished de-labeling and cleaning 46 bottles, all except for a little dip in the StarSan. I have a few dozen more out in the shop that I need to clean and start the process over again. At that point I think I will have all the bottles my wine and...

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

I don't watch TV and watch very few movies but I will try to remember that one.

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

Winemaker81 I usually use a wine thief. Today I just thought sticking the hydrometer in the bucket would be quicker. My only problem with my wine thief is one gallon jugs. It won't fit through the neck. What do you guys use to check the SG in a one gallon jug? I was just pouring out a small...

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

I will definitely be doing that in the future. I was totally puzzled by this reading but I can see what is going on now.

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

I highly doubted this reading but didn't know what the heck caused it!

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

Ok I just did another reading in the same bucket, same hydrometer. It went down to 1.052 which makes more sense after the 1.064 reading 2 days ago but after I moved it and stuck it in again to watch it move around in there the reading went up over 1.12 again. This must have something to do...

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

UHG!!! I can't type numbers! 1.124 1.124 I really need to get better at proofreading! Honestly, I do know how to read it! (just a little frustrated with myself AND still perplexed as to how it went up instead of down when it is still fermenting along.

Uh oh! I made an error on reading my original SG!

Sour grapes the original should have read 1.096 (mistyped). Today it was much higher at 1.24. OH! I forgot to add that two days ago when I checked it the reading had dropped to 1.064. I'm thinking todays reading was not right. I checked it in the primary bucket, and checked multiple times...
