Corks..to soak, or not to soak??

I purchased a bag of 30 premium corks which costs roughly 9 dollars. I have read on here that some people do recommend soaking corks and some people dont. I understand why not to do it in a k/na meta solution as it will cause my italian floor corker to corrode. But, will soaking my corks in...

Yeast nutrients and staggering for mead

I will be using Wyeast 4184 sweet mead yeast. I am not sure what the O.G. is going to be yet as I have not started it. I will be using 12lbs. of clover honey and 96 oz. of blackberry puree.

    Oaking a Blackberry Mead

I liked the characteristic of the french medium oak. Hoping maybe to get a vanilla flavor out of it

    Oaking a Blackberry Mead

Also, if it is going to be a sweet mead, will oaking still help? Or is that something you should only do to a dry wine/mead?

    Oaking a Blackberry Mead

Let it sit in there for about a month before tasting it? Or is that something you would want to check every 2 weeks?

Yeast nutrients and staggering for mead

I had a question about yeast nutrients for mead and the proper way of staggering. I plan to make a blackberry mead/melomel when I get home. I read that staggering nutrients is the best way to go about it with a mead. I plan on using Fermaid K. I know one teaspoon is enough for 5 gallons. What I...

    Apple Wine Issue

Julie, I guess my only question now is: If the vanilla enhances the wine and makes it better, how much would I add to a 5 gallon carboy?

    Oaking a Blackberry Mead

I have one gallon of Blackberry Mead in the carboy. I have two different packages of oak. I have a 3oz package of medium toast american oak, and a 3oz package of medium toast french oak. Which of those two would compliment my blackberry mead the best? Also how much should I add to a one gallon...

    Apple Wine Issue

Saramc, your suggesting adding a drop or two of vanilla extract to the sample glass? I do not think she is going to be messing around with it until I return, but I will definitely give it a try, we have not been testing it at serving temp, we have been doing it at room temp. i will make sure I...

Here are the pictures. The wine glass had no bubbles in it this time. And the other picture is the meter my wife bought for my coming home present.

    when good wines gone bad

She took an S.G. reading and it is dry. She pulled a sample, added sugar to it. The sugar removed the bitterness. She came up with a reading of 1.025. And she said it was really good. She stated that she could start to taste the apple in the wine. She bought a can of concentrate just in case...

    Apple Wine Issue

Julie, great news! She poured it into a glass tonight and there were no tiny bubbles in the glass! I am thinking that the wine glass she poured it in to the other night might have had residual soap in it. My wife loves super sweet wine, dessert wine. She sweetened the glass to her taste and the...

    Apple Wine Issue

Bernard, I see where you are coming from with that but I do not have the capabilities to do that, nor does my wife understand the process. The process I chose is difficult and time consuming, but it is easier to explain to my wife this way than it is to involve math and chemistry (which I know...
