Racking through bottom valve of VCT

No what I’m asking is filling from the bottom up. So instead of filling from the top of the tank, you push the wine in through the bottom valve on the tank (I have a vacuum pump)

Racking through bottom valve of VCT

I’m stepping up to much larger batches in anticipation of our vineyard bearing fruit next year and have also stepped up to larger equipment including 200L VCTs. However, I don’t have a 4-5ft long racking cane to reduce splashing. Is there any reason not to put a barb on the tri clamp valve...

    Good source for oak spirals

Anyone have a good source for French Oak spirals that will sell in higher quantities (hopefully for a better per-piece price). I know 1 spiral is good for oaking about 5-6 gallons of wine, but I'm doing 20-25 gallon batches in stainless so would need 4 or so in each tank. I've never used them...

    Vinmetrica Newb question

I think I’m following and yes I have that stuff. So does only the wine/distilled water go in the small beaker and only the Titrant in the burette to accurately/slowly meter out the drops I assume.

    Vinmetrica Newb question

I picked up a new-to-me Vinmetrica Pro Kit that came with several burettes - and I'm almost embarrassed to ask this but - what exactly are they used for vs. the pipettes? All the videos Vinmetrica has show testing manually without the stand etc. There's one video that shows the setup of the...

Fungal and Disease control at high temps?

Thanks - yeah they're not bearing yet. I talked to a commercial vineyard owner yesterday who uses sulfur at all temps below 90 but I'm still wary. I sprayed a very low sulfur mix yesterday since it was only 80 and not supposed to get above 85 today but I will check out Rally. Systemic is...

Fungal and Disease control at high temps?

I have 150 vines in the ever-so-humid and wet state of Maryland. I learned the hard way last year you can't really spray wettable sulfur mixed with mancozeb anytime when the temp will get above 90 in the next 3 days without burning your foliage. Luckily everything made it, but the problem is...

    Soil moisture content & irrigation

Hello - I'm having a heck of a time finding info on proper target moisture content, particularly for newly planted vines. Soil is a sandy loam. Top few inches bake in the sun and dry out quick but below in the root zone holds some moisture, but I can't find info on what the optimal target...

    Anyone spraying liquid boron?

Here is the soil report. There's a pounds per acre calc for boron. I have no idea how that would actually translate to something in a backpack sprayer for instance that could be applied systemically. Everything else has been done. The low boron is a likely result of the low PH. A lot of...

    Anyone spraying liquid boron?

Yes I've had soil samples done and there is almost no boron in the soil.

    Anyone spraying liquid boron?

Does anyone have any experience with liquid boron to correct boron deficiencies? Local vineyard owner mentioned applying via foliar spray along with anti-fungals but have no idea about concentration as I know it's a micronutrient.

    Production from 14 vines?

So I have a connundrum - We are planting this spring but did some math wrong and have space for 14 more vines. Was thinking about doing something different for fun (Gruner Veltliner) - but what could one reasonably expect to yield from 14 vines? We are planting about 150 total, the rest are...

    Looking for Blichmann WineEasy equipment

Probably a long shot, but I'm looking for any Blichmann Wineeasy equipment anyone may be looking to part with.

    Soil pH and planting?

This soil is classified as Sandy loam and I believe the acidity came from oak trees that used to be there. We do get a good bit of rain in MD but there’s many successful vineyards, I just think it’s the oak leaves rotting over all those years. It’s on a cleared hillside and we already turned...

    Soil pH and planting?

Thanks - I am going to be working in lime as deep as I can get it - my soil has pretty high sulfur so gypsum might be problematic. How much soft rock phosphate and granite dust do you typically apply? Here's my soil sample (attached)

    Soil pH and planting?

Hi all - Establishing a new home vineyard in Maryland and have some planting questions. We have been testing our soil this the fall as we have acidic soil (started at 4.2) and adding lime to the point where we've gotten it to 4.7 taken about 12-14" below the surface. The nursery we're...

    Digital Brix Meter recommendation

Does anyone have any experience with the Milwaukee digital brix meter or any others they recommend? I'm interested in the accuracy. This would be for measuring grapes off the vine as well as must.

Nice! Do you buy fruit anywhere locally?

    New wine maker in MD

Hello all - New winemakers here. Some people might call us crazy but we are starting big. We will likely buy fruit (hopefully from the Virginia or western MD area) for the first few years but are also in the process of planing 100 vines with room for more. We won't plant til Spring but I've...
