    My first day of winemaking

Interesting. I’ll unlock the lid and cover it lightly. The FWK videos posted by Matteo have him snapping the lid and placing an airlock right after pitching the yeast

    My first day of winemaking

So I should not snap the lid closed for fermentation? I just added the yeast, snapped the lid closed, and placed an airlock. Cellar is 60F, but the must temp just now was 68F after having been left in the cellar overnight. The instructions say D47 can ferment as low as 60F. I’d like to ferment...

    My first day of winemaking

I wanted to start a thread as I start my first wine kit. This is my first foray into fermentation and winemaking. Yesterday I started a Finer Wine Kits Tavola Riesling. After sanitizing with Star-Sans and spritzing materials with EverClear (something a professional winemaker told me to do) I...

    Temperature, and Fermentation Time.

Quick question: Can an Inkbird temp probe be placed directly into the fermentation? Or should I tape it to the side of the bucket. Looking to keep accurate control of fermentation temps

Using marbels to fill headsace. For one-gallon carboys, what is the accepted method?

An AIO definitely seems like a good tool. I've added it to my list of equipment goals. Will most likely continue with marbles for this batch.

Using marbels to fill headsace. For one-gallon carboys, what is the accepted method?

Marbles - WalMart Is this an appropriate source for marbles? I'm going to be in the same boat with my Riesling batch. I read about an Oregon winery, Antica Terra, that uses river rocks to top-up their barrels. Wal-Mart marbles soaked in star-san seems like a cheap alternative. Looking to avoid...

First-time winemaking - Want to make a (Great!) Riesling

What is the timeline you recommend? A commercial winemaker once told me 3 months, but he is also trying to make a living with his product. So I imagine he is less willing to take a risk

First-time winemaking - Want to make a (Great!) Riesling

This sounds like "bottle-shock?" I was visiting a winery last year and the winemaker said he waits a minimum of 3 months after bottling before selling. I'm assuming I should wait the same before drinking?

First-time winemaking - Want to make a (Great!) Riesling

Thanks for the reply! I think we're definitely on the same page. I'm excited to make around 30 bottles and drink them over the next few years. I am totally enamored with the process of wine and am really excited. The kit is on its way!

First-time winemaking - Want to make a (Great!) Riesling

I sincerely appreciate everyone's replies! I'm thinking that I may go with a FWK Tavola Riesling. The reviews seem pretty good, and it looks like a nice balance between a structured kit and fresh juice. With how much fun I have just reading about winemaking, I can only hope that I will be...

First-time winemaking - Want to make a (Great!) Riesling

Hi all, Long-time lurker, looking to finally take the plunge. I want to make the best riesling I possibly can. My taste leans towards Kabinett's from Germany. Meanwhile, my wife loves Chateau Ste. Michelle's Harvest Select 😅 I'd like to post a few questions, and feel free to chime in with any...

    First-Time Kit Advice

Hi all, I have finally decided to pursue wine as a hobby and am looking into kits. I’ve seen lots of recommendations, but I need some help narrowing it down. This will be my first foray into winemaking/brewing and I will need to start from scratch with equipment. I’ve seen beginner kits from...
