Soo... when does this hobby pay for itself?

Well I just ordered through Midwest Supplies. Their prices and shipping were very good. Fine wine didn't have the filter I want. I'll keep him in mind next time though.

Soo... when does this hobby pay for itself?

I kind of outpaced my bottle supply. I figure it will be nice to have all of the same style bottles. My post was more of a joke I just didn't anticipate myself getting so involved in the hobby. Sounds like the Italian is the way to go. If I don't ever have to buy another one then I might as...

    Yet Another Skeeter-Pee Journey.....

I just started mine yesterday with the slurry from my merlot. Pretty excited. I'm going to add the other bottle of lemon juice tomorrow. I think I'll do the same and just keep it in gallon growlers. Sounds like it goes fast and bottling it wouldn't be worth the PITA factor considering how...

Soo... when does this hobby pay for itself?

Haha. Another $200 today on an italian floor corker and a new filter. This week is going to be 10 cases of bottles. Man oh man.

Has anyone used this filter system?

Grant Dugger, I think I'm going to go with the one that I posted. The gravity one looks good, but I have an aspirator so I might as well one that uses forced fluid.

Has anyone used this filter system?

After you rack do you fill the bottom with marbles or anything to keep the head space at a minimum? That seems better than buying a bottle to top up or adding water.

Has anyone used this filter system?

Ahh sweet. Maybe that's what I'll do. Do you always gravity filter? Only way to do it with the vinbrite?

I already have an aspirator. This seems like a great way to save $150 and still accomplish the same thing.. http://morebeer.com/view_product/5759//Beer_and_Wine_Plate_Filter_Kit_

    F-Pack (or Super pack)

Cool. Didn't know you could make your own.

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Could you just add the 1/4 tsp from the beginning or no? I haven't done anything with testing kits yet.

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Thanks for the reply guys. The kit says to stir it down everyday to get the juice out of the grapes. So i'll do that for the next week. You bulk age these kits for a year don't you Wade? Do you have to add extra meta in these kits for aging long than six months. I know you have to with...

gotchya. What would be the side effects of stirring it right in from the beginning?

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I whipped it up this morning and the gravity was at just over 1.100. Much better. The yeast got whipped around but I'm sure they will be just fine. On a side note. Why is the yeast just placed on top and not stirred in? Oxygen?

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Yah I guess I should have realized that. Hope it doesn't turn into a mistake. Alcohol will only end up at the high 8's. RJS just called me back and they say eh. whatever. Not very helpful at all. Thanks for the advice Wade. I'll look at it tonight and see what it say. I'll definitely use...

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Adding the rest of the water and the grape skin pack. I definitely stirred it up well enough. My drill on fast for a couple of minutes when blending in the oak. The cellar classic online says 1.072-1.110. The winery series instructions I got say different. The box I got had some red...

RJ Spagnols SG way too low!

Just started my Washington Merlot. Finished it up and SG was only 1.082. Kit's are supposed to start between 1.095 and 1.110. I called RJ but no answer. Pretty disappointed considering it is my most expensive kit and the only one I've had the sg off. Any thoughts?

RJ Spagnols How do you mix it up?

Haven't been doing this a long time but I think it seems like you should spend the money on the reds. Probably can go a little cheaper on the whites. I've made three WE VR white kits. They taste pretty good. I got a premium chardonnay coming. It will be interesting to see the quality difference.

RJ Spagnols How do you mix it up?

Thanks Wade. Thought this thread would get a little more action. Just picked it up today. I'm going out of town this week so I'll start it next. I was impressed on the amount of grape skins that came with.
