    Carboys 6.5

Thanks, Wade, Tom, Tom, The carboys have the usual top, but about 3/4 inch down what looks like a very short thread (about 1/2 to 5/8) starts. There's what appears to be a manufacturing date on the bottom, 1956. Have you seen this type before?. Cheers Bill

    Carboys 6.5

Got 2 from glass recycling at the twp dump today. Bottom of carboy reads 6.5 gallons. Must be USgals, measured around the shoulder because the carboy hold about 27liters to the neck, a little short for Imperial gallons. I make mostly kits and consider these basically useless for bulk aging...

    Cork Taint

I'm seeing more and more screw caps showing up here in the recycle bin at the township dump. Mostly just cheep plonk right now. Were less than rural so during the winter you hardly ever find a cork finish bottle, the locals go for the cheap stuff. Come summer when the tourists come up north...

    Cork Taint

Is the screw top 1 standered size and can you buy new caps for salvaged bottles. If not bottling could work out a little more expensive. Bill

    Raisins

Thanks, Allie Yes the sunmade ones are available but only the very dark ones. I used those in my banana kiwi hooch because no oil was listed on the package. I have more varieties and choice with the others, so if a good wash will fix it, it gives me more options. Cheers Bill

    Raisins

I'm checking out what raisins I have access to and practically all of them have some kind of oil. Contains vegetable oil (bulk store). Palm oil (supermarket). Anybody else have this problem. Is it a problem. Can I simply rinse and use?. Thanks Bill

    Time on lees

Hi,Wade, Smurf, I understand about co2 and what you are saying. My main concern was the depth of lees, (way more than the red wine kits I'm used too) if thats not a problem I'll give it another week or two and check SG then. Everything looks to be going fine. Cheers Bill

    Time on lees

Hi, all I have a question about leaving banana kiwi fruit wine on lees. I transfered to secondary about 18 days ago. Wine is still fermenting (almost done) and clearing nicely, but the lees are about 1.5 inches deep The bananas were boiled in a pan and only the water added, and the kiwis...

I have one fermenting now and it came with Iso-Kleer not chitosan. Though I don't know whether that has anything to do with the clearing problem. Bill

    Banana Kiwi recipe

By high alcohol I ment high for a fruit wine. 3lbs sugar in 1 usgal would be about 15%-16%. I'll dilute, pitch the yeast and hope for the best. Thanks for all your help. So whats the moral of this story. Check your SG early to see how much sugar you are getting from your fruit.?:e\ Thaks Bill

    Banana Kiwi recipe

Hi, Allie. Been messing about with it. So I'll tell you where I am right now. According to the SG tables I have here JKs recipe was for a fairly high alcohol wine anyway. So assuming I should have used a full 20L of water anyway I added another 5 liters. That got me to just under 1.12...

    Banana Kiwi recipe

Strained some through a paint strainer bag this morning, 1.15. My floating thermometer now floats horizontally instead of vertically. I may of interpreted JK banana wine #1 heavy bodied recipe wrong. It calls for 1USg of water. If you use a full gallon then add sugar and raisins you would...

    Banana Kiwi recipe

Uh oh. So I came up with a concoction. 11kg bananas, sliced, simmered skins on and strained), 1.5kg kiwi, 1kg raisins. (found some). 20 liters total. I used a recipe on J Kellers site with a similar mix (no kiwis), but more raisins. He used 3lbs sugar for 1 USgal (3.78 liter) mix. So a...

    Banana Kiwi recipe

OK, kiwis back in. I read somewhere that citric acid (kiwis) would be good with the mallic of the bananas, but have no experience making fruit wine. Bill
