Potential problem: OK to touch wine with skin?

I am laughing because about 2 months ago I did the exact same thing!! Now I put the airlock on before the lid goes on as well. I washed my arm and in it went. My kit is doing the extra 2 week settling before bottling but the wine thief says it's good and about 3 other people who got a small...

    Grrrr Fruit Flies

Well I looked into my primary last night and discovered a fruit fly stuck to the side about an inch below the lid, but not touching the must. How it got in with the lid on I do not know. Now the wait game begins to see if this pest has ruined my wine.

What's the best sanitizer for making wine?

Being a newbie, I bought Iodophor from my LHBS and so far, have had no issues with infections. It does stain my tub a little but comes off with a good cleaning. However I plan on buying 5 lbs of K-meta and start using that instead.

    Another Newbie mistake

Well Wade, guess what... without doing a single thing, just letting it sit there all by itself, I have re-fermentation. Nice action going through my airlock. So when it stops I will bottle and hopfully enjoy some Graff 3 weeks later!

    Another Newbie mistake

Wade, I think that is where I went off on my thinking with adding the K-meta. I was thinking since I have to add some juice I don't want it to ferment again. But duh, I needed it to ferment it again in the bottle. It was Nottingham yeast, not sure what that ferments out to ABV wise.

    Another Newbie mistake

Thanks for the post Wade, I put 1/4 Tsp in 5 gals... I also see some white spots in there now, I kinda has that yeast look to it. Or either that it is some of the hops, I didn't know I was supposed to strain them out in the beggining. I had dried hops on the top inside the carboy and while...

    Bottling my First Kit Question

I might be there one day, I have a total of 31 gallons in various stages right now. None really ready to drink, but I will bottle my MM Summer Breeze Black Cherry Shiraz kit in about 2 weeks. After racking again, I kept a little sample and I must say it wasn't to bad. Plus my Apfelwein, I racked...

    Bottling my First Kit Question

Tom, You are a brewing mad man, you have 100+ cases and still brewing away??

    Not Quite Ready

In my very limited experience, I have noticed bubbles in my wine, a process that just happens from the ferment. I notice when I degass my sample, the SG will be lower than when I first took it. My Cranapple was very bubbly and dropped 2 points when I did this. Went from 1.036 down to 1.016. Give...

    Another Newbie mistake

Ok, I made Brandon O's Graff, it is a hard Apple Cider with DME and a touch of hops. I racked it yesturday and not thinking clearly I added a 1/4 Tsp of K-Meta. Not a problem right? Wrong, I forgot this is going in beer bottles and it needs to bottle carb before serving. It has been 24 hours...

    primary fermenter, open to air?

I put an airlock in the small hole, but my lid does not seal, so I airlock it to prevent dirt, dust, bugs etc from getting in. As long as the locations temperature is within the instructions range you should be fine. Once you rack to the secondary you will, bung it with an airlock. I fill...

    Racking before bottling question

Tom: Thank you about 2 weeks ago I added K-meta and sorbate per the directions. So I will just rack to a clean/sanatized carboy. Runningwolf: Looks yummy, my Piesporter is going in the primary today now that I just racked my wifes Icewine to the secondary.

    Racking before bottling question

Not trying to Hi-jack this thread, but did not want to start a new one for virtually the same thing. If I rack to a new carboy for 2 weeks, do I need to add some campden tablets? My MM Black Cherry Shiraz is ready to bottle, but will do the extra 2 weeks like you suggest in this thread...

    Been kicking the idea around

So I have oh I don't know, about 30 gallons of wine at various stages right now. After making Brandon O's Graff, which is more of a hard apple cider, I thought I might like to try my hand at beer. So some of you might not like this beer, but right now it is my favorite. Is there any...

    Orange Carboy Caps

The heck with the caps, I ordered 10 bungs from finevinewines.... I might try putting them in hot water for a bit then fitting it over the carboy for shape, hopefully it will shrink to form as it cools. But I will go with the bungs from here on out!!

    help with sparkling

How long has it been in the secondary? What is your SG? It might not taste very good if it is young... I am sure you could carb it up like beer and cold crash it beofre you get bottle bombs, but who knows how it would taste.

    Orange Carboy Caps

I have the ones that are supposed to fit 3,5 and 6 gallon carboys. Some fit perfectly fine while some get bent a little on the edge and then they don't seal at all. I might use them for primary still, since I can rig a blow off tube real easy!

    Orange Carboy Caps

Thanks for the info... just ordered some the multi fit bungs online!

    Orange Carboy Caps

I have a little problem. My LHBS was out of bungs, so I bought the orange carboy caps. Well some of them are a little distorted and will not make a good seal unless I push down on it, but as soon as I let go no seal. Others are in good form and seal up nicely. How do I fix the distorted ones?

    Stupid Noob Question

Gewurztraminers and Rieslings are good. I have had commercial styles of these, but have not made a kit yet. Personally I am going to get a Piesporter as I have not had that wine in about 10 years. It is an off dry and very fruity!
