It’s slightly sloped, but we are definitely viewing mountains from the vineyard, not planting on them!

Completely, and you make a great point. My research into Riesling was one of the reasons I chose it. It likes sandy loam, which drains well. It likes high diurnal climates, where it can ripen during our warm days and preserve acidity at night. It likes blue slate, which I have a bit of in my...

Oh, also, Blaufrankisch is definitely on my short list for the future, and maybe Dornfelder, but I would REALLY like to try them before considering planting them, and I can’t get them. I hope the Gruner does well!

My soils have a pH of between 6.25 and 6.5. It’s all sandy loam and some areas with calcium and limestone, and a bit of slate. I’ve done a lot of research, and I’ll continue researching as I’ll be planting more, and possibly different, vines over the next few years. Some of that research...

For reds (about 1/3 of my first planting), mostly Cabernet Franc with a few others in the ground to see if they survive. For whites, a greater portion of Riesling and Chardonnay (if I can still find Chard), and slightly smaller portion of Gruner Veltliner.

How cold does it get where you are, Greg? The Minnesota cold climate viticulture program has done some amazing stuff. I've had a hard time finding much hybrid-varietal wine to taste, much less enough variety to get a good idea of its potential, which is definitely a motivational issue for me in...

That's good to know. I assume replanting a percentage of my vines will be part of the regular process. That's what I've read about cold climate vineyards, anyhow, so I'm going in with that mindset. I know they grow those three varieties in the Finger Lakes region, which seems to dip below zero...

Purchasing Vines for a brand new vineyard

Thanks! I've added it to my wish list for now. :) I appreciate the tip on the reviews...they would have made me nervous otherwise.

Thanks, WI_Wino! Bummer about the wildlife damage, but your vines looked great this past season! Also, where did you get your tape gun??

Thanks, GreginND! I met the owners of Willow Creek Winery here and they said nice things about you and your viticulture. Definitely inspiring! I’ll be planting a few reds for completely experimental purposes, but I’m focusing on whites, as that’s what I think will do best in my climate. Also...

Purchasing Vines for a brand new vineyard

Thanks again, Countrygent. I’ve wondered about that possibility for the future, so I’ll have to research as I go. I’d love to clone from my own cuttings!

Purchasing Vines for a brand new vineyard

Thanks, Countrygent! And I found the list: http://www.inlanddesert.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/IDN_Dormant_Availability_List.pdf I was looking at Current Availability, rather than Dormant Availability.

Purchasing Vines for a brand new vineyard

Thanks, Sage and Countrygent. I'd looked at their website and liked what I saw. It think I'll start there. They didn't have everything I'm looking for, but they have a large selection. note: It seems their current availability is not loading, unless they have nothing left, which seems unlikely...

Purchasing Vines for a brand new vineyard

Hi, all! I'm pouring through many online sites looking at bare root vines to start my vineyard, and I notice very few of them have prices listed. As someone who plans to start with under 200 vines the first year, it feels like a lot of work to call around to numerous places to let them give me...

    New cold climate optimist

I joined about a month ago but have just been popping in and out to read threads so far, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I live in the Bitterroot Valley in Montana and will not be the first person to grow wine grapes here, though I'm leaning toward the riskier move of planting mostly...
