    Dark Red?

Wow, that's interesting (and comforting). Maybe that's just the way it is with some of the bigger red kits. Guess that's especially true when grape skins are part of the mix.

    Dark Red?

Hi Tom, Well, this is gonna sound extraordinarily stupid, but I really don't know how it tastes, mainly because I don't know how it is "supposed" to taste at this point. This is my first kit, so I'm not too familiar with the tastes at various stages. I'll put it this way, it seems to be...

    Dark Red?

Hello again, Well, my initial kits are progressing toward bottling day, and I've of course run into more questions. One of my kits is a Red Zin. It's a kit that had grape skins, so it's really dark. Here's the deal.... I think it's clearing ok. It's been almost 2 weeks since I...

    It's actually kinda fun!

Ways to get Free Wine Bottles

My brother actually just had a wine tasting party a couple of weekends ago. We went, but had to go home kinda early to get the baby to bed, otherwise I would've brought home the bottles that night. In any case, he's saving them for me, so no worries. Nor I have to check out the freecycle...

You know you're a winemaker when....

HA! There you go! Nothing like dumpster diving for wine bottles. Those days may be over soon though. I called a local wine store today that does tastings, and then had my wife run by and pick up some bottles. They gave her 3 cases, but they said that their other store, which has a wine...

Ways to get Free Wine Bottles

I just scored!! Wait a minute, let me re-phrase. That sounded bad. I'm a married man, and I'm at work. But seriously, we have a nice local wine shop, where my wife and I will occasionally attend a tasting, or buy a bottle of commercial wine. I just called them, and while they seemed a...

Ways to get Free Wine Bottles

I actually called a fairly large local winery that does a ton of tastings, but they told me they don't give away their bottles, because they offer a credit for them when people return them, so as to encourage recycling. Struck out there. Oh well.

You know you're a winemaker when....

So as not to hijack this thread, I'm gonna head over to the wine bottle collecting thread and post on the subject over there. I am trying local wineries too, but....

Ways to get Free Wine Bottles

As I posted in another thread, I have reduced myself to riding around our neighborhood at night on my bicycle, peeking into neighbors' recycling bins. Crazy, I know.

You know you're a winemaker when....

I thought about asking some local restaurants to put some aside for me. Anyone ever try that? Of course there is always the option of buying them, but I refuse to do that.

You know you're a winemaker when....

When you consider (I'm not admitting anything here) doing the following: Riding around on a bicycle through your neighborhood at night with a flashlight.... .... with the kid trailer attached.... ... with a plastic storage bin in the trailer.... ... looking for wine bottles in...

To Rack or not to rack....

yeah, they actually never sank to the bottom during the 8 days in primary, so I just skimmed them off with a santitized slotted spoon and tossed them before I racked.

To Rack or not to rack....

Is that a big deal if it only gets a hair below 1.000, or is it just one of those things? Also, regarding the grape skins... The kit said you could put them in the little sack they gave you, or just toss them in if you wanted more color. I opted for the toss 'em in route, and got rid of them...

To Rack or not to rack....

Hi Tom (and all), I just checked the SG, and it is hovering just a hair below 1.000, which is where it has been for a few days now. As long as there is nothing to be risked by doing so, I'm just going to leave it where it is for now, and check the SG for the next few days, and maybe rack later...

To Rack or not to rack....

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it. So far, I'm getting two main themes. First, patience is a virtue in wine making even more than in everyday life, and second, a bit more information would be helpful for more advice. I will go check SG in a bit, and will report back...

To Rack or not to rack....

.... That is my dilemma. Ok, here's my question. I have a guess from my research, but I am looking for other more expert opinions before I do anything. I have a Red Zin kit in secondary fermentation in a carboy right now. I'm on about day 7 in secondary, day 15 overall. The kit calls...

    Stupid Noob Question

That's what I am afraid of. I'm no stranger to obsessive hobbies. I work in an office, and I listen to music most of the day. Believe it or not, I actually have a pair of $1100 In Ear Monitors that I use. It's crazy, but they sure do sound good!

    Stupid Noob Question

The way I figure it, I've got another month or so before I start my batch of white, as I am not ready to buy more buckets and/or carboys... yet. Actually, I should clarify. I don't think I can convince the wife yet that an operational expansion is in order. I need to prove that I can make...

    Hello From Orlando, Florida

Not sure if Charley's is still around, but my Dad and I used to go to a place called Lee and Rick's Oyster Bar in Orlando. It's off Kirkman on Old Winter Garden, and it's been there forever. Been a long, long time since I've been there.
