    pruning infected shoot

Those are tiny dots, but I think Black Rot is an acceptable diagnosis. In the past I've immediately removed anything I've found with Black Rot. I'm not sure what others have done. Could be Phomopsis as well?

    Late spring

Pictures will help us if you have them with regards to your specific vines. I'm not too far from you (same weather). I'd love it if I could get just one day without rain. My vines (Frontenac, Frontenac Gris, Itasca, Petite Pearl and Concord) are all looking fine at this point. Without having a...

Post a Meme, any Meme! (no politics)

I visited Butte County Idaho once (Arco). While I was there, (no joke) I saw their high school. The mascot was the Pirates. They were literally the Butte Pirates.

Here is an interesting antidote for birds.

"In Gilbert’s experience, the trick works better on cherries than apples, namely Honeycrisp. Starlings peck through the apple skin and eat the fruit from the inside. Gilbert doesn’t use sugar on wine grapes because they don’t get washed before processing and the extra sugar would affect...

    Disease/distress Identification

Aren't we all over the map. So much to rule out. My understanding with Walnut is that the Hydrojuglone on dead trees/scraps will dissipate with time and exposure to the elements. A live tree, or one that has recently died as well as the husks of the nuts them selves have high concentrations of...

    phomopsis & little green bug

Looks like phomopsis. I rotate in Topsin M for it.

    Disease/distress Identification

I'd be curious about the type of tree that was mulched. Before I planted my vines I had to remove some Black Walnut trees that are nearby. Black Walnuts produce a large amount of Juglone which is a natural herbicide. I've only read a little about that Juglone may be toxic to grapes, so certain...

I have some and I love them. Go for it!

    Snowstorm right after Bud Break

So I went out and gave them a look. My hope was that the snow and ice from the night before gave them good enough cover for the 2-3 hours of sub 32 temps we had. Unfortunately It looks like most of them are in fact gone: Most of them were about this length. There are a few that haven't...

    Snowstorm right after Bud Break

Followed by a night of sub 32 temperatures. I'm thinking all of the primary buds are toast...

    When to Harvest?

Depends on where you are and the variety of grapes that you're harvesting. pH is a big factor for most people, as if it gets too high, then your wine will be more susceptible to spoilage. I've got a lot of Northern Hybrids, and I track TA as a harvest parameter. It also depends on what kind...

    Climate zones

Looks like you're not too far from me. I'd say go conservative and plant well within your zone. I'm in the Chicago area at 5b on the map, yet my Vidal Blanc has been getting hammered by the winters. From what I can tell I lost all of the buds from last season. Even though they're supposedly...

    Our first Wine show....

I hear you with the zoning issues and having to deal with the plan commission. Everyone was helpful in getting things through the red tape, which was great. But at the end of the day I don't think a lot of it was necessary. It cost way more than I was anticipating as well. Fortunately we were...

    Muscadine pruning help

It shouldn't be too hard to identify what is 1 year and what is older. If you can, post a few pictures and we'll see if we can help you out.

So I'm not too far from you. I've got Frontenac, but not Foch. Have you done your pruning yet? Have a picture? One thing with Frontenac in this area is Black rot. I think you should be prepared to start a spray program to control fungus. Even a few simple applications can save your crop from...

    Snow is almost gone

I just checked and started pruning them yesterday. The canes are still green, but I have yet to find a bud that is alive. For being a "cold hardy" variety, Vidal seems pretty touchy. I think one is dead to the graft. We'll see how things look as I continue to prune them.

    Snow is almost gone

Yes. Nothing serious so far. Petite Pearl, Itasca and Frontenac have all survived. Frontenac showed more damage than I anticipated. I've lost a few buds I would have preferred to keep. I haven't gotten to my Vidal Blanc yet, which I expect to be completely wrecked. I've got low expectations, so...
