    Petite Pearl Ph question

Just got them tested, didn't have a chance until later: 20 Brix 3.32 pH 6.3 g/L TA Not bad numbers overall, really. I went ahead and crushed and pressed what I had into 16 oz. of grape juice. It went over well with the kids. Very sweet and thick.

    Petite Pearl Ph question

I let what little I had left hang. Sadly I've got 100% loss now. Possums and Raccoons finished them off (2 and 6 "accidents" now respectively). I pulled in about 3 lbs this morning so I have something to check the numbers on. I'll probably just press them into a few cups of grape juice for the...

How many gallons of Lon D's Skeeter Pee have been made?

    3748 + 20 = 3768

Soil Ph test possible with Ph meter?

You could do that and then check it against what you'd expect to find at your address courtesy of https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm Although I can't say I'm exactly sure where to find the Soil pH in the mountain of soil data that is provided here...

Harvest early or tough out a week of rain?

I'm staring the same week of rain down. For what it's worth I'm letting mine hang.

    Itasca

I agree, but this is a new grape here, everything is on the table. As far as Itasca in the vineyard, I've been very impressed with the vines resistances thus far. My Frontenac and Petite Pearl leaves are all balled up from Phylloxera. The Itasca vines do not have a single Phylloxera gall on...

    Petite Pearl Ph question

Next Week is solid rain for me. I'm not really expecting much by way of sugar over 20 at this point because of that. I called another grower who has some land further south from me and he suggested letting PP hang until pH hits 3.4. My losses continue to mount (mice now...). I feel like once I...

    Itasca

So because I was negligent (Missed a few flowers when clipping), a few of my Itasca plantings this year ended up with mature fruit on them. I couldn't help myself once they got to a certain point and didn't clip them off. I just pulled them in today: 22 Degrees Brix 3.38 pH 7.8 g/L TA Looks...

    Grape Identification: Pacific North West

Sweet Smell Plus that color and shape of grape, and the shape and color of the leaf makes me think Labrusca. My Concords currently put out a very grapey sweet smell right now. I'm going to guess Catawba: . If the grapes turn deep purple then concord would be the next guess.

    Petite Pearl Ph question

Turns out my additional losses weren't the raccoons, Possums this time around. One has had a terrible, unforeseeable accident. On the level of destruction they rank above Chipmunks, but below Raccoons. Test Results are in: 18 Brix, 3.07 pH and 7.95 g/L TA. I have to say I heard of Petite...

    Petite Pearl Ph question

A good read. Thanks John. I'm pretty excited about Petite Pearl for it's wine making ability myself. I tested mine 16 Days ago with the following numbers: 15 Brix, 2.84 pH, and 13.5 g/L TA. Since my only experience before this has been with Frontenac, seeing a T/A number under 15 well before...

    The correrct brix

Depends on what and where you're harvesting. Certain grapes can only get to a certain point before they start to raisin up. You'll get a different alcohol content and different residual sugar depending on the yeast used.Typically there is more than just Brix at play though when deciding to...

    Petite Pearl Ph question

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the pH go the other way after cold stabilization? Or does the acid precipitation release more hydrogen Ions? I've got some Pearl to bring in next month so I'll be interested to know how yours turns out. I'm pretty excited about it overall.

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

So I wrote that post a few days ago, did some reading for a bit, and then wandered outside at around midnight. Right in the middle of the vineyard was a raccoon. Sure enough. So after quite a bit of reading on the subject of vermin: In Illinois it is illegal to relocate one after it is...

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

I may have already placed an order for coon cuffs. Just to look at them.

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

Unfortunately my state is stupid. Even if the darn thing was living in my attic and peeing on my kids, I'd have to beg the state for permission before trapping it. https://extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/solutions_remove.cfm I worry that if I ask for the stupid permit to trap the Raccoons on...

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

For some reason I hadn't considered raccoons. I do know that chipmunks are a problem for me, though. Last year I didn't think that Chipmunks were an issue for me until I started having losses. I figured it was birds getting through the netting somehow. Then one morning I went out early and saw...

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

My Frontenac is currently being involuntarily cluster thinned by chipmunks. I have killed 29 so far this season, yet I still am losing grapes from left to right. I just made some Capsaicin spray and put it on the grapes, and I'm hoping that will work. Anyone else have chipmunk issues?

    Can someone identify this please

Looks like Riparia to me. I've got it all over my yard and climbing up into trees and everything. Do whatever you want with them, they will come back, and with a vengeance. I've got one Riparia by a stump that I've mowed maybe a dozen times and it doesn't seem any worse for wear.

    Cluster Thinning (Frontenac)

That's probably a fair assessment. I have riparia all over my yard in areas I haven't controlled it. It grows so well here I'm considering trying to cultivate a vine and see if I can get them to do more than just put out leaves. The grapes are tiny, and not particularly sweet, but they've got an...
