    The 2024 crop year

Foch is harvested. Beautiful morning in Utah Ph 3.83 Brix 26.6

I am new to wine making, not very new to grape growing.

Well, another Utah wine maker! They’re a couple of us on here. Im just east of you in Riverton. I grow several varieties, a small vineyard of 72 vines. I make about 8 cases a year. Like others have said, I would not blend in that concord.

    Grape growing question

It begins at bud break and continues through out the growing season. Only time I dont spray is when its over 100 degrees. I spray mostly Captan. Here in Utah its powdery mildew we fight. Black rot occurs only once in awhile. Years ago I almost gave up on vitis-vinifera, then I got serious...

    The 2024 crop year

Yes, my second vintage from Foch this year. They’re in there fourth leaf. They grow like a weed and then just shut down in August. They complete veraison uniformly. I made wine last year when they hit 26.5 brix. Wine so far is wonderful. This year Im going to let them go, see if i can get...

    The 2024 crop year

Looks to be another good year. Foch is always the first to get netted.

Better than hail. Damn hail scares me.

    The 2024 crop year

My vines are doing great. Another large crop, thanks to no late frost. I installed a drip irrigation system this year, and I believe I’ve been over watering. Vines started to really yellow. Which I believe is iron deficiency. Iron Chlorosis. Now it m cutting back water in this heat. Hey, it’s...

    Marechal Foch or Leon Millot

I’m up to sharing a bottle when my vintage is ready. Foch is so versatile. My daughter is a wine maker in Oregon, she loves the Foch in the region. It’s prolific, grows like a weed. In July I hedge and leaf pull. It’s easy to harvest to early when the numbers are in. Don’t. Please don’t. When...

    Marechal Foch or Leon Millot

Can’t comment on Leon Millot, but grow Foch here in Utah and it does very well. Makes great red wine. Oregon has quit a few vineyards. Does well there too.

    What's in your glass tonight?

    That just sounds heavenly.

    The 2024 crop year

30 degrees at my place this morning, (Utah), Foch has pushed buds but not opened yet. Fingers crossed.

    The 2024 crop year

10 years I’ve grown seyval, cab franc, Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Foch and chardonell. Here in the salt lake valley the only thing I’ve had to worry about are late frost. 2022 saw a late frost in May, took 90% of my crop. 2023 was picture perfect. Chardonnay and Cab Franc are the only ones that are...

Baco Noir and Seyval Blanc in Utah

Bacos are gone. I planted 12 Foch, 12 Cab Franc, and 12 Pinot Noir n there place. Very difficult to rip out vines you planted. But, crown gall was eliminating them at a rapid rate.
  16. mgmarty

    Crown gall?

    Thanks for the reply.
  17. mgmarty

    Crown gall?

So whatever this is, it crumbles. It’s attached to the outside of the trunk at every nodule.
  18. mgmarty

    Crown gall?

Well I know I don’t have any snails in the vineyard. I have tons in my flower beds. I have torn out all my Baco vines. I feel they were prone to frost damage, thus the gall damage.

Help needed with choosing a variety: Prairie Star vs. E.S. 10-18-14

I will let you know. I planted Prairie Star three years ago and will finally make wine with it this year. It is a different grape, not vigorous, in Utah’s heat anyway. They like top wire cordon training as well, they like to drape. I planted it to blend with my Seyval. I’ve drank wine made...
