    Shoot thinning by professionals

    That's what I did today.

Planning for small vineyard in southern Arizona

I don't think my first year planting had many clusters and none in the tube. Iirc I may have seen a few midsummer flowering. Year 2 had lots of clusters.

    Musings from an old codger...

He declined the offer, but I think it did at least trigger some retrospect and that I'm serious. He finally agreed to meet with me. We walked around the yard point out some of the main problems. His values are definitely different than mine and basically said the view isn't worth anything...

roses for early detection of mildew

I bought the property next to mine from a little old lady with a rose problem. So many roses.... The mildew did seem to be visible on the roses before the grapes but was still too late for me to control it. That said I do look for it on the roses. I did spray today, was going to do it this...

    Musings from an old codger...

Your comment, triggerred a thought, why don't I offer to buy it? I really think the owner has no intention of making it his permanent home. He could make a huge gain on his investment and I could just rent it back to him at market rate while he finds his next project. I got lucky on some stock...

Your comment, triggerred a thought, why don't I offer to buy it? I really think the owner has no intention of making it his permanent home. He could make a huge gain on his investment and we could work a deal so he stays in the house while he finds/builds his next project. It's a bad short...

    Musings from an old codger...

The bigger is better still baffles me. One of my favorite houses was a tiny 800 sf cape cod in Media Pa. 40' wide lots, shared driveway between houses. Of course the shared driveway could have been awful but we had a great neighbor. I may have to start looking at houses, not to buy, but to...

    Musings from an old codger...

My case is like Nashville, basically 2 houses on one lot. I've been trying to work with the owner but haven't gotten anywhere. Also talked to the building department, my council man etc. basically it is currently legal and will not be changed this year. The sad part is that there is a way to...

    Musings from an old codger...

So the whole "ADU" accessory dwelling unit was initially started about 8 years ago and described as mother in law apartments, basement apartments, small separate structures in yards. The roll out was limited and required community board approval etc. Then last year they made it way more...

Can I rant about zoning? I'm gonna. They changed zoning rules in my neighborhood of 1950s 1 story homes with footprints of about 850sf. Previous rules allowed accessory structures up to 12' max and footprints up to 50% of the main house. Now, if you call it an "adu" you can almost whatever...

    Worry-free Alcohol?

Interesting, I wonder if the lack of, or reduction in, intoxication effects would change your desire to have a glass of wine. Hmmm I do worry about heath effects of drinking too much.

    Realistic Spacing Question

Great point about airflow and disease. The threat is real. Most of my vines have fences or walls behind them so airflow isn't great. I had a powdery mildew outbreak last summer and the few vines with good airflow never got infected even though the infected vines were only 5 ft away.

    Realistic Spacing Question

The vines will fill in the gap along the rows. The row spacing will be function of equipment and geometry. With only 30 vines I suspect everything will be done without real equipment. ( I've got 30 vines too and my equipment is a clipper and hand pump sprayer). I only have a single row along...

    What R you doing today?

Spent half the day doing minor pruning. Cleaning out dead wood and trimming back some of the branches I had left long. I am the slowest pruner ever. Still lack confidence, but felt like my understanding of what was going on has improved. My growing goal this year is to better tame the...

    The 2024 crop year

My 32.5 degree temp this morning (ice on my metal roof and cars) made me think of this thread and wonder why I wasn't at all concerned (and if I should be) which triggered this post. The dew point must have been 32.5 since the temp was steadily down all night then stopped at 32.5 and stayed...

    The 2024 crop year

Tempranillo budbreak on 4-14-2024. Malbecs should open today, Tannat's still look a 3-7 days out and Baco's opened last Friday.

    The 2024 crop year

I'm pretty excited about this year. I'm getting better at pruning, grapes are nearing the maximum extent of where I want them, and I have a good feeling about the weather pattern remaining good all summer... I haven't had any frost/freeze problems but my microclimate is warm/protected. 22 was...

    The 2024 crop year

Don't tell my grapes, they don't know it's too cold here ; ) Typically we are freeze free from mid April to mid October and have about 3500 growing degree days ( f degrees). Typically I harvest the baco the first week of September, the tempranillo from early September to the end of September...

    The 2024 crop year

I'm in Salt Lake City at about 4600ft. I chose Malbec since it seems to do well in Argentina and my climate is pretty similar to Argentina. I also have some Tempranillo, Tannat, and Baco Noir. I think Malbec and Tempranillo are considered early ripening. I think the Tannats are considered...

    The 2024 crop year

I find the various temperature systems the hardest to get a comfortable feel for. I think variable 0 location is what makes it hard. Our weather report did mention the odd direction the cold front was coming from, moving north east versus the typical south east. We got a little snow but it...
