1st Apple Wine Racking

The sediment was thick on the bottom. I was pushing down the siphon tube and as it got to within 1/2 an inch a sediment vapor started to rise and flow into the siphon tube. I did strain the sediment thru a fine metal strainer, but looks like I have lost about a 1/2 a gallon of the initial 4 gallons.

A real bummer it that one of my glass carboys broke after filling it up about a pint. So long 2 glasses of wine. I wish it hadn't broke, but glad it did early. From now on I'm sticking to plastic carboys!

When you say it broke, did you bump it on something or did it just break because of a fault in the glass?

Just for future reference if you take that 1/2 gallon and put it into a taller bottle, like a 1500ml wine bottle it will usually settle more and you end up losing less.

When you say it broke, did you bump it on something or did it just break because of a fault in the glass?

Had to be a fault. Used once before, handled carefully. It was in position under the other carboy but off some, and I lifted it about 1/2 an inch to move into better position as my siphon tube was a bit short, and to my unbelieving eyes wine was all over the place and I was looking at the very bottom of the carboy. Not happy!

On a good point, my small taste test was positive.

BTW, the fermentation seemed to be about done. 24 hours after putting in the yeast it was creating a bubble burp in the air lock every 2 seconds. At its best it got to 1.5 seconds and was like that for about 3 weeks. A week ago once every 11 seconds. I stopped looking, as I think it was done burping.
