I realize this is an old post but just wanted to say ,I opened a 2 year old bottle of Spagnols EP Amarone and it was awesome. Never played with this one, just went with directions. It was good at 6 mos., great at 1 year, but the few that made the 2 year mark..

Good to hear. I just pulled the trigger on that one last week.

My 2.5 year old CC Showcase Amarone is sooo good I ordered another kit! We have only tried 3 bottles & gave 2 away as gifts, but this is our FINEST wine! The new one went into the carboy last week, need to top off, so went to ABC & their most reasonable Amarone in $53.99! Needless to say that's out of my price range, so talking to their wine expert he recommended topping off with a Valpolicella, which he said was a similar grape, though not dried like the Amarone grapes. We will try it, heck last time I used a Cab, (ough Sutter Home) & it's AWESOME! Roy

You guys are making me drool. Mine just went into secondary last weekend. Long way to go...

I used the raisins and the oak in secondary, skins in primary. It will spend time in a Vadai barrel as well.

Roy: Thanks for sharing the Valpo for topping up. I was dreading topping up with a $35-$50 wine.

My Amarone from kit came alive at about 2.5 years. Even a few months before that I was sorely disappointed. Amazing how quickly it changed.

As another option, you could look for a reasonably priced Valpolicella Ripassa. That is the same grapes as the Amarone but is fermented on gross lees of a batch of Amarone. Don't think you could get much closer to Amarone than that without spending big bucks.
